Movers and Shakers to meet The regular meeting of the Pahrump Valley Movers and Shakers, a support group for people with Parkinson's disease, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Desert Greens Clubhouse, 350 W. Wilson Ave. (next to hospital). Jodi Servin, M.S.W., L.S.W. from the National Parkinson Foundation, is the facilitator and consultant for the group. Plans will also be finalized for a group bus trip to Las Vegas Sept. 30 to hear an expert on Parkinson's disease. Anyone with Parkinson's disease, as well as their caregivers and/or family members are welcome to attend this group. It is open also to anyone with a movement disorder. Stroke screening scheduled Sept. 29 Residents living in and around Pahrump can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke. Life Line Screening will be at the Pahrump Moose Lodge No. 808 Sept. 29 at 1100 East Second St. Appointments will begin at 9 a.m. A stroke is ranked as the third leading killer in the world and the second among women. Through preventive screenings, the risk of having a stroke can be greatly reduced. Screenings are fast and painless. They involve the use of ultrasound technology and scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries, which can lead to a stroke; aortic aneurysms, which can lead to a ruptured aorta; and hardening of leg arteries, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. Also offered for men and women is a bone density screening to assess the risk for developing osteoporosis. Each screening requires ten minutes or less to complete. A complete vascular screening package is $109. Sign up for a complete vascular package and include the osteoporosis screening and the cost is $129. Boy Scout project to aid Pahrump Scouts Boy Scout Troop No. 808 is developing a camping equipment storage project where equipment can be loaned free of charge to boy and girl scouts in the Pahrump Valley who cannot afford to buy their own. Drawings may be used in the museum's newsletters and should be representative of desert life: flora, fauna, artifacts, people and places. SafePlace seeking donated office space SafePlace, an organization that is here in Pahrump to provide immediate help and support to youth in crisis, is trying to obtain donated office space that would adequately accommodate youth drop-ins and storage for supplies and donations. The organization is new to Pahrump and would provide services such as crisis intervention, shelter, job placement, food vouchers, hygiene products, toiletries, transportation and much more. Hospice cell phone collection program Nathan Adelson Hospice has sent its first shipment of cell phones collected from its Collective Good program. The hospice is asking the community for used cell phones for recycling to continue the ongoing program. Drop off places for cell phones have been identified and collection boxes have been put in place. New businesses want to help and four new ones have become community partners: The Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce, Desert Tanning Salon, Charleston Peak RV Park at the Winery and Wells Fargo Bank. They join established partners, Martinizing Dry Cleaners, Nevada Federal Credit Union, Valley Electric, The Wine Cellar and Nathan Adelson Hospice. Used cell phones may be dropped off at any one of these locations. PVHS seeks two volunteers The Pahrump Valley High School's administrative office needs clerical assistance from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. everyday to answer phones, perform filing, greet people, etc. The nurse's office needs a volunteer certified in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) trained. This volunteer would also assist in performing health aide duties. Hours will be determined. Both of these volunteers are needed as soon as possible. Help for veterans There is an office in Pahrump and in Tonopah where veterans can receive help in using their earned military benefits. The Pahrump office is in the Nevada Job Connect facility in the Calvada Eye building and the Tonopah office is in the Nye Regional Medical Center on Main Street.
