Sheldon sage grouse hunt results available
The Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge Hunt draw results have been released and are currently posted on the Nevada Department of Wildlife Web site at www.ndow.org. The Sheldon refuge is located in the extreme northwest corner of Nevada on the Oregon border. There will be two seasons that make up the special hunt; Sept. 16-17 and Sept. 23-24, with hunter participation limited to 75 hunters per season. Shawn Espinosa,a department wildlife biologist, states that the department received 532 applications this year for the 150 reservations. Espinosa reports that the sage grouse population should be comparable to that of previous years. Hunters are requested to provide a wing from each bird taken as part of a long-term study of sage grouse. The data is used to identify production rates in the species and to calculate overall harvest levels. Past data collection efforts have shown that less than 8 percent of the state's population of sage grouse is harvested. |
