By PHILLIP GOMEZDeputy's shooter still on the loosePVT
After obtaining and serving a search warrant, the Nye County Sheriff's Office gathered evidence and valuable information pertaining to the identity of the man who shot Dep. Harry Williams Sunday night but nevertheless were unable to get their man. The bird had flown the coop when sheriff's deputies, together with officers of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, executed a search warrant at 2390 E. Travois St., south of Thousandaire Boulevard near Homestead Road, late Tuesday night. Additional information uncovered during the search, however, led to the latest identification of the assailant as Jesus Rodrigues, according to the Sheriff's Office. In Wednesday's PVT, it was reported, based on information from the Sheriff's Office, that the assailant was believed to be Ignacio Baltazar Garcia. Leads now point to Rodriguez as the trigger man in the pickup truck stopped by Williams Sunday. According to the Sheriff's Office, confirming evidence discovered during the house raid indicated that Rodrigues had been living at the residence but had recently fled in order to avoid capture. Rodrigues is believed to have departed with a substantial cache of weapons taken from the residence. His immediate whereabouts are unknown, but information acquired in the investigation is to be used to obtain a warrant for his arrest, according to the Sheriff's Office. In serving the search warrant, the Sheriff's Office's Scorpion Task Force and the office's street crimes unit put another man under arrest. James Garcia, 51, the main occupant of the house, was arrested as a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. He had in the past been convicted on several narcotics and escape-related charges. Additional charges are pending against Garcia, who is being held on $5,000 bail. Meanwhile on Tuesday, an unidentified male turned in two letters, one typed and one handwritten, to the front office of KPVM-TV Channel 41 off Wheeler Pass Road. The letters were written by Vicki Garcia and Shauna Millar, who later turned themselves in to the Sheriff's Office. Both are reported as having been in the truck with the shooter at the time of his firefight with the deputy. The letters reportedly said the two were caught in the middle and tried to grab the gun away from the shooter. The letters have been turned over to the Sheriff's Office. |
