Two run for two-year Pahrump Town Board slot

Two men are running for the two-year unexpired term on the Pahrump Town Board

Billy R. Toler

Toler moved to Pahrump 11 years ago because he "wanted to get away from the rat race" of Los Angeles.

If elected, Toler said that he would like to "see what I can do to get Pahrump growing, get a bit of business down here. Get more tax money down in southern Nye County, so homeowners aren't always paying for it."

Toler said he realized the board only has jurisdiction over the cemetery, fire department, and parks and recreation, but he believes it can still influence the county commission to ensure positive growth.

Toler also plans to listen to the public more and act on its behalf. He said he would like to make better use of the town board e-mail so that he could receive feedback from people as to what they would like to see done.

"We're going to grow, and I know that," said Toler. "But I'm going to weigh it and do what I think the majority of the people would want, and what's right for Pahrump."

Don Rust

Don Rust is running for town board because he "got tired of simply sitting there and complaining, and I thought I could try to make a difference."

Like Toler, a Pahrump resident for the past 11 years, Rust has a list of things he would like to achieve.

First, he would like to see the board work harder with the Regional Planning Commission (RPC) and the county commission to get people more jobs here so they do not have to go to Las Vegas for work.

Rust also said he wanted to work with the RPC and the commission to "help the board work harder to avoid paying for studies they just ignore."

He also has environmental concerns and would like to institute a recycling program, and he said he would "work harder with the RPC and commission to meet ... standards for dust, which could have severe consequences if they are not met."

He believes the town's infrastructure needs improvement as well, and if elected would attempt to improve the water systems and paving issues in town.

Rust does not have any previous political experience, "so I'm not a politician."
