By BRIAN KUNZI
PANRANAGAT VALLEY -- The Rosemary Clarke Middle School Sharks completed a highly successful year in sweeping the titles in a tournament played at Alamo High School here. The Sharks won both the A and B Division titles, while the Shark C Team was the runner-up in the B division. The A Team opened play against the Mustangs from Overton Mack Lyon, winning 25-20 and 25-22. The Sharks then dispatched the host Panthers 25-19, 21-25, 15-8 to earn the top seed. The Panthers got past the Mustangs to set up a rematch against the Sharks in the championship game. After back and forth action, the Sharks opened a lead of 21-17. The Panthers fought back and knotted the score at 24. The Sharks were able to break serve to lead 25-24. After return of serve by the Panthers, Alyson Kunzi passed to Ashley Lindgren setting up a kill by Casey Scheller for the victory. The second game started slowly for the Sharks, who fell behind, 13-5. The Sharks responded to a pep talk by coach Susan Toomer, urging the Sharks to hit the ball more aggressively. Kunzi served seven straight points to bring the Sharks to 14-12, before the score was knotted again at 15 off a Scheller kill from a set by Lindgren and assist from Kunzi. The score was tied at 21 when Scheller was able to hit of an attempted block to give the Sharks a 22-21 lead. The final three points came off a service winner by Scheller that could not be returned, a tip by Kunzi at the net and another service winner by Scheller. The Sharks had another strong performance serving. Ali Gomez was perfect at 20 out of 20, followed by Chrissy Seliga at 97 percent and Kunzi at 95 percent. Toria Dance and Scheller lead the Sharks with eight service winners or aces each, with five added by Kunzi. Scheller also had a tournament-high 12 kills, with Taylor Hill contributing five. The Sharks finished the year 20-3 in match play and were 44-12 in total games played. The B and C Teams squared off in the opening game with the B Team winning 16-14 and 15-13 against the sixth graders. The B Team then beat Mack Lyon 15-6, 16-17 and 15-10 before dispatching the Panthers 15-4, 15-12. The C Team beat the Mustang and Panther B to earn the second seed in bracket play. The B Team beat the Panthers 15-11, 15-8 to reach the championship game. The C Team showed their earlier victory was no fluke against the older Mustangs winning 15-13, 12-15, 17-16 to set up a rematch with the B Team. In the championship match, the B Team won the first game 15-9. Coach Amy Braach got her charges to fight back to win the second game 15-11. The B Team, under the guidance of Coach John Toomer, rebounded in the final game to dispatch the C Team 15-2 and secured their third straight tournament title. |
