PREP VOLLEYBALL Lady Trojans stumble against Moapa ValleyPVT
Will the real Pahrump Valley High School volleyball team please stand up? Is it the group of girls who battled visiting Overton Moapa Valley to the wire, before emerging a 29-27 victory in the second game of a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League match Friday night during Homecoming? Or, is it the team that struggled in losing 25-18 in the first game and then after that exciting second-game triumph, stumbled to 25-14 and 25-8 losses? The setback dropped Pahrump Valley to 3-4 in the league, with its final match at home Thursday against Boulder City (5 p.m.). A loss to the Eagles would relegate the Trojans to fourth place in the final standings and a No. 4 seed in the Southern regionals, to be played Nov. 3 at Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite. The likely order of finish in the league: defending league and regional champion Las Vegas Faith Lutheran first; Moapa Valley second, and either Boulder City or Pahrump Valley third. "Once again, we were beset by problems," said Richard Barker, the Trojans' first-year coach. "After overcoming a commanding lead by Moapa Valley in the second game, I thought we were on the road to securing a win (in the match). It was not to be. "We once again played with less movement and enthusiasm than our opponents," said Barker. "In the third game, I had to take out Michelle Dannenberger because of an injury." Barker was disappointed that no one stepped up into the void and took on the challenge. "So, we suffered through another tough loss on our home court." Barker is confident his team has talent and has the skills and athleticism to be a "formidable presence at the net. "Yet, some nights, we simply don't get it out onto the court," said Barker. Against Moapa Valley -- which won 13 consecutive state championships from 1991 through 2003 and is seeking a return to that prowess -- the Trojans were unable to serve with any consistency. Only Taylor Lau was able to record an ace in the fourth games. Dannenberger had 14 digs, eight kills and three blocks before she left the court; Kristi Daffer had 17 digs, 11 kills and a block; Angelica Villa had 27 sets-assists, and Brittney Lindgren had 17 digs. Pahrump Valley played at Pahranagat Valley Alamo Tuesday night in a non-league match. "For the short time remaining in the season," said Barker, "we will go forward with our eyes still looking to the prize, in hopes of finding the right combination of players -- and heart -- to secure a bid for the playoffs." |
