SPECIAL TO THE PVT

Kirk Brotherson is returning to the Virgin Valley High School boys basketball program.

He has 528 victories and 12 state basketball titles in his career, which included an extended run as the Bulldogs' head coach in the 1990s.

After leaving Mesquite, Brotherson went to Utah where he served as the principal of Alta High School for several years before returning here in 2004.

Brotherson served as the assistant to Gary Neva in 2005-06, who stepped down after two seasons.

Brotherson will have only two returning players from the 2005-2006 team -- sophomores Spencer Planck and grandson Alex Brotherson. Expected to help are Doug Hafen, who is the Bulldogs' football quarterback, and Austin Goff, another standout football player.

Under Neva, the Bulldogs advanced to the Class 3-A state tournament in 2005 and was second to state champion Las Vegas Faith Lutheran in the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League in 2006.
