Passenger as deputy was shot sentenced to drug court term
Vicky Garcia, a passenger in the truck from which Nye County Deputy Sheriff Harry Williams was shot in the leg Aug. 27, was sentenced to drug court by Fifth District Court Judge Robert Lane Monday. Garcia pleaded guilty to obstructing a peace officer for not coming forward and immediately giving information on the attempted murder, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a glass pipe. Lane sentenced Garcia to six months in jail on each count consecutively but suspended that sentence. She was given credit for time served in jail. Nye County Chief Felony Prosecutor told the court Garcia grabbed the arm of Jesus Rodrigues as he shot the deputy. Rodrigues later ordered all occupants out of the car. Lane told Garcia a lot of people feel pressure in life, but he believes most of them don't resort to drinking or taking drugs. He warned Garcia that drug court will be tough, with three counseling sessions per week and three drug court hearings per week to start, and a requirement to hold down a job. But Lane said he hopes the sentence will "get you out of the drugs, violence and guys that shoot at cops." Garcia said she could succeed in the program. If Garcia fails at drug court, she will be placed on informal probation. |
