Salvation Army toy distribution sign-ups

The Salvation Army is accepting Thanksgiving and Christmas food and toy applications through Dec. 15 only.

Applicants must have a working phone number and proof of residence. Toy applications are for children from newborns to 14 years old.

The Pahrump Social Powwow is looking for volunteers to assist with the three-day powwow to be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 17, 18, and 19.

Veterans information

Nye County Veteran Services will hold a free information session at 9 a.m. Nov. 7 at Job Connect on Calvada Boulevard.

All veterans are welcome to attend. General information will be presented on all veterans affairs benefits that veterans may be eligible for.

Vendors needed

Rising Star Equestrian Association is currently taking applications for the R.S.E.A. Equine Extravaganza vendor breezeway Nov. 4-5 at McCullough Memorial Arena.

Ten by 10 booths are available for $40 and 5 percent profit for one day; and $60 and 2 percent of profit for two days.

Artist in Residence

The Pahrump Arts Council and the Pahrump Valley Museum invites the community to visit and converse with Ernie Fuller, Artist in Residence, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 401 E. Basin Ave.

The Nevada State Health Division will hold a flu shot clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at 250 N. Highway 160, Suite 6.

The Pahrump Community Church invites the public to join its Family Festival from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at 1061 E. Wilson.

Early Halloween celebration

The public is invited to celebrate Halloween early from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the company of Nevada's most famous ghosts at the Goldwell Open Air Museum, near the ghost town of Rhyolite.

Museum activities will include making miniature ghost sculptures, pumpkin carving and trick or treating in the 1905 visitors center. Beatty Days is also being held this weekend, featuring bands, burro races and raffles.

Thanksgiving, Christmas distribution

The Pahrump Family Resource Center (a No To Abuse program) and the Salvation Army are working together for Thanksgiving, Christmas distribution.

Sign-ups will be held until the end of October by appointment only at the resource center, 621 S. Blagg (between Highway 372 and Wilson). Documentation needed is picture ID and one month's wages at the appointment.

United Way holding volunteers banquet

The United Way of Pioneer Territory will hold its annual "Cheers for Volunteers" banquet, a recognition of volunteer work performed by our citizens, Nov. 3 at the Saddle West Hotel and Casino.

There will be a no-host bar at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., and the award ceremony at 8 p.m. The cost for dinner is $30 or $240 for a table of eight.

The nominations forms for volunteers have been distributed to many organizations, but may also be obtained at the Chamber of Commerce or by calling 751-2400 and leaving a message.

Church to hold its Fall Festival

First Southern Baptist Church will hold its annual Fall Festival for boys and girls from age 2 to the fifth grade from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at 741 Fehrs Way.

Guns & Hoses flag football fundraiser

Nye Country Sheriff's Department and Pahrump Fire and Rescue will hold a Guns & Hoses flag football fundraiser to support the SafePlace program from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Pahrump High School football field.

Admission is $6, with free admission for children under 10. Bring canned food to help support the Salvation Army Thanksgiving food giveaway and get $1 off admission. Tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce.

The event is to help give a giant kick off to help support the SafePlace program, which provides immediate help and support to youth in crisis.

National Finals Rodeo ticket raffle

Sheriff Tony DeMeo won two tickets for the National Finals Rodeo to be held Dec. 3 at the Thomas and Mack Center at UNLV.

The tickets have been valued anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000; 100 raffle tickets will be sold for $25 for a chance to win these tickets (five raffle tickets per person maximum). The winner will be picked Thanksgiving day.

Options Series

Nathan Adelson Hospice's October forum will focus on the members of the teams that are out in the community taking care of hospice patients and their families during the Hospice's monthly Seminar Options Series on Channel 30 from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Channel 30/62 Studio, located at 250 Nopah Vista.

Members of the panel will include Administrator Shelly Heppler, Admissions Nurse Robyn Schoenfeld and more.

Elementary school book fair

Mt. Charleston Elementary School will hold its annual Scholastic Book Fair Monday through Nov. 3. Books may be purchased daily between 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the school library, 1521 East Idaho.

The school will be open to the public during its parent/teacher conferences from 1 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1.

Early childhood screening

The Nye County School District has a responsibility to locate, assess and identify children ages 3 to 5 who are not enrolled in any school program and who may have some kind of developmental delays.

If your child is currently being served through Nevada Early Intervention, please contact the district about 90 days prior to your child turning 3 years of age.

If you live in Pahrump, to make an appointment for an evaluation for your child for either Nov. 17 or Dec. 1, please call the Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) office at 751-2638. The new office is located at 2200 S. Mt. Charleston Drive West.

Giant rummage sale

Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold a giant fall/winter rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 3 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 4 at 1300 East Highway 372.

Books, movies, Christmas items, clothes, crafts and more will be available, as well as baked goods, candies, soup and a variety of sandwiches.

Holiday bazaar

St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church will hold a holiday bazaar from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 3 and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 at the church, 631 W. Irene St.

Laureate Omicron Chapter garage sale

The local Laureate Omicron Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi will hold its seventh annual November garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 at 3751 S. Nevada Ave.

Monies received from the sale will be used for a monetary scholarship that is awarded to a qualifying graduating female student from Pahrump Valley High School and also several other local philanthropic donations on an as-needed basis.

Toys for Tots, No to Abuse fundraiser

A fundraiser to benefit Toys for Tots and No to Abuse will be held Nov. 4 at Horizon Academy in Amargosa Valley.

Sponsored by the Horizon Academy Student Council, the event will feature raffles, a car wash, a baked goods auction and a lot of Mexican food. Lunch is free for anyone who donates an unwrapped toy.

In addition to the fundraiser, Horizon Academy will conduct an open house to give the public a chance to tour the campus and talk to staff and students.

Both events will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the baked goods auction to take place at 1 p.m. Fundraising events will be held at the academy's south parking lot, located on the corner of Highway 373 and Mecca Road.

PAC Theater Guild auditions

The Pahrump Arts Council Theater Guild will hold auditions for "Nunsense" at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at WestCare Nevada, 2280 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 101.

Needed are actresses, singers and dancers who can sell a song and learn how to tap dance. Prepare a short comic song and be prepared to read and dance. Performance dates will be Feb. 9 through Feb. 17, 2007.

Eastern Star bazaar

The Annual Eastern Star bazaar will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Masonic Temple, 281 Gemini, off Blagg, north of Basin.

A large assortment of crafts, Christmas gifts, baked goods and a patio shop with white elephant items and clothing will be available.

In addition, the drawings for the crocheted bedspread and a replica of the retriever stamp will be held at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by calling 727-8589 or 727-1050.

Donations will go to UNR cancer research and guiding eyes for the blind.

Join Girl Scout Troop No. 169

Girl Scout Troop No. 169 has many openings for girls in grades four through nine to make a Junior/Cadette Group.

Meetings are held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays at Mt. Charleston Elementary School in the multi-purpose room, located on Idaho (between Pahrump Valley Boulevard and Dandelion).

Help for veterans

There is an office in Pahrump and in Tonopah where veterans can receive help in using their earned military benefits.

The Pahrump office is in the Nevada Job Connect facility in the Calvada Eye building and the Tonopah office is in the Nye Regional Medical Center on Main Street.

Ken Shockley and his staff are there full-time to assist veterans in obtaining the benefits they earned.
