Trojans in 3-A setback

LAS VEGAS -- A 78-yard run ... a 75-yard interception return ... a 45-yard pass.

Those three plays produced touchdowns for homestanding Faith Lutheran, in the Crusaders' 31-17 victory against Pahrump Valley in a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League football game Friday night.

That the game was stopped for 45 minutes because of a spectacularly dangerous lightning storm had nothing to do with the outcome. Faith Lutheran had produced its own storm in moving its record to 2-1 in the league and 3-4 in all games.

Pahrump Valley's defense, under pressure all season, yielded 402 yards to a quick and diversified Faith Lutheran offense that had breakaway threats in Adam Jones and Steven McCall. Jones, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior halfback, rushed for 111 yards on nine carries, including a 78-yard touchdown dash in the first minute of the game.

McCall, a 5-11, 165 scatback who is also a point guard for the Faith Lutheran state 3-A championship basketball team, gained 102 yards on 14 attempts, caught two passes for 39 yards, and returned an intercepted pass 75 yards for a touchdown.

While coach Jake Kothe is the architect of the Crusaders' offensive attack, junior quarterback Max Done is the engineer. The running game produced 241 yards on just 39 attempts, while Done completed 8 of 15 passes for 161 yards, including a 45-yard scoring pass to Diontae Wright. Connor Maloney, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound wideout, caught five passes for 67 yards.

In stark contrast, the PVHS offense had 253 yards, 137 in the second half because senior tailback Rocky Spencer was finally able to find running room. After being limited to just four yards on nine attempts in the first half, Spencer churned out 112 yards on just 10 attempts in the final 24 minutes, including a 66-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Travis Ott was under constant pressure throughout the game, which was why he was able to complete only two of 13 passes, with two interceptions and a touchdown. Jordan Booth caught a 50-yard bomb in the second period, shortly after the game -- stopped with 8:30 left in the second period because of lightning -- resumed.

Ott also completed a 31-yard pass to James Chapman in the second quarter, but the senior signal-caller went 0-for-7 in the second half. McCall intercepted a pass in the third quarter and returned it 75 yards for the Crusaders' final touchdown and Trojan receivers dropped two others in long-gain situations.

"Turnovers hurt us, but we've got to play smarter," said Brian Hug, the PVHS coach. "We blocked a field goal, but then had a turnover. We have to be able to take advantage of those kind of situations."

The Trojans, 0-2 in the league and 2-5 in all games, celebrate Homecoming this week, concluding with their league battle with Overton Moapa Valley Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Moapa Valley defeated Las Vegas Legacy 21-7 in a game stopped in the third quarter by lightning.
