By DON McDERMOTTVOLLEYBALL Crusaders hold back PV girlsPVT Lindsay Profitt entered the lineup as a serve specialist, with her Faith Lutheran High School volleyball team holding a tenuous 16-13 lead against visting Pahrump Valley in a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League match Friday night. In the next 90 seconds, Profitt served five consecutive aces to break open the game and power the Crusaders to a 25-14 win that gave her team a four-set victory against the Trojans. The scores were 25-19, 25-15, 15-25, 25-14, as Faith Lutheran moved to 5-0 in the league and 15-2 in all matches. Pahrump Valley is 2-3 in the 3-A and 15-12 overall. "Lindsay does a great job for us; she's been doing it for a while," said Amy Fisher, the Faith Lutheran coach. To counter what Profitt did, however, is to recognize the Trojans did little to neutralize the effectiveness of her low-line drive serves down the center of the court. Profitt finished with 10 aces, and at the net, Emily Koch, as nasty an outside hitter as there is in the league, had 11 kills as Faith Lutheran swept the league series from Pahrump Valley. In that fourth game, Pahrump Valley led 3-0, but Profitt came in with the score 3-1 and promptly served back-to-back aces to tie the score. A series of unforced errors allowed Faith to jump ahead 13-7, before the Trojans used two kills by Michelle Dannenberger and a couple Crusaders errors to close to 15-13. An illegal hit gave the Crusaders side out that allowed Profitt to enter the game and spark a 10-1 run that decided the match. The Trojans, after losing the first two games -- which they never led -- took advantage of uncharacteristic mistakes by the Crusaders and cruised to a 10-point win. PV's girls led 7-2, 11-8, 15-9 and 22-11 enroute to the win. "Upon reflecting on the match, it is difficult to put a positive spin on our performance," said Richard Barker, in his first season as the Lady Trojans' coach. "But ... having the skill, then not getting it out onto the court is one sign of a team that isn't ready to deliver under conditions of tough competition. "With what little season remains, we will redouble our defensive training," said Barker, as well as "focus intensely on learning to believe more strongly in our own team's capabilities." Against Faith Lutheran, libero Brittney Lindgren had 14 digs; Angie Villa had eight digs, three kills and 17 assists; Michelle Dannenberger had seven digs, 10 kills and three blocks, and Kristi Daffer had eight digs, three kills and four blocks. Pahrump Valley was at home against Mesquite Virgin Valley Tuesday and will host Overton Moapa Valley Friday in league matches. Coach Richard Barker's team plays at Class A Pahranagat Valley Alamo Oct. 24 and closes the regular season at home against 3-A rival Boulder City Oct. 26. The top four teams in the league advance to the Southern regionals Nov. 3 at Mesquite, with only the regional champion advancing to the state tournament, which will be played Nov. 10-11 at Galena High School in Reno. |
