Pahrump Valley High School's winter sports teams -- boys and girls basketball and wrestling -- will be heavily active in tournaments during the 2006-2007 season.

The tournaments:

Wrestling

Coach Craig Rieger's matmen, besides competing in four Southern Nevada Class 3-A round-robin meets, will go to the:

Boulder City Duals, at Boulder City, Dec. 2;

Sierra Vista Invitational, at Las Vegas, Dec. 8-9;

Desert Storm Classic, at St. George, Utah, Dec. 15-16;

Marty Taggart Invitational, at Overton Moapa Valley, Jan. 6;

Nye County Championships, at Round Mountain, Jan. 9;

Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational, at Spring Creek, Jan. 12-13, and

Mohave Invitational, at Bullhead City, Ariz., Jan. 19-20.

The Trojans will not compete in the High Desert Classic at Tonopah; instead, they will travel to Spring Creek to take on some of Northern Nevada's best teams (including defending state 3-A champion and host Spartans).

The Southern Nevada Class 3-A regionals, with Pahrump Valley as defending champion, are Feb. 3 at Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas, with the state championships Feb. 9-10 at Spanish Springs High in Sparks.

Boys Basketball

Lonnie Shereck's team is going to the:

Lake Mead Christian Academy tournament, in Henderson, Nov. 30-Dec. 1-2;

Pahrump Valley Times Trojans Cage Classic, at PVHS and Ninth Grade Academy, Dec. 7-8-9, and

Bishop Invitational, at Bishop, Calif., Dec. 27-28-29.

The Trojans will play non-league games against Las Vegas schools Lake Mead Christian Academy, Sierra Vista, Trinity Christian, Silverado, and The Meadows, as well as eight Southern 3-A contests (two each against defending league, regional and state 3-A champion Faith Lutheran, Mesquite Virgin Valley, Overton Moapa Valley, and Boulder City).

Girls Basketball

The Bob Hopkins-coached Trojans will compete in the:

River Valley Invitational, at River Valley, Ariz., Nov. 30-Dec. 1-2;

Pahrump Valley Times Trojans Cage Classic, at PVHS and Ninth Grade Academy, Dec. 7-8-9, and

The Lady Bulldogs Classic, at Centennial High School in Las Vegas, Dec. 27-28-29.

Non-league games are slated against Sierra Vista, Henderson Basic, Hurricane (Utah), and defending state 1-A champion Pahranagat Valley Alamo.

The 3-A regional basketball tournaments for both boys and girls teams will be played Feb. 15 and 17 at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas.

The 3-A state tournament will be contested Feb. 23-24 in The Orleans Arena. In 2005 at the arena, the PVHS girls defeated Boulder City 55-53 on a last-second 3-point field goal by Melanie Maeder in the state championship game, giving them back-to-back titles. Faith Lutheran won the league and regional titles last season.

Faith Lutheran's boys and Spring Creek's girls are the defending state 3-A champions in basketball.
