Fire restrictions lifted in southern Nevada

LAS VEGAS -- Wildland fire officials lifted fire restrictions on the Bureau of Land Management land, National Park Service land (Lake Mead), Nevada Division of Forestry land, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service land, and U.S. Forest Service land (Spring Mountains National Recreation Area) effective Oct. 14.

Due to recent changes in the weather, fire danger eased from extreme to moderate. As it happened, the hardest rain in months was soaking the area that day. The afternoon before, snow could be seen atop Mount Charleston.

Calendar fire restrictions, however, are still in effect for the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area until Nov. 15. Those restrictions are as follows: no campfires within one mile of homes in Kyle and Lee Canyons, Deer Creek, Cold Creek and the communities of Trout Canyon and Mountain Springs. These areas are signed, advising the public of the restrictions.

"We would like to thank the public for their prevention efforts this fire season," said BLM fire management officer Kevin Oliver. "There were considerably fewer human-caused fires in southern Nevada this year, given the extreme fire danger. We ask that visitors continue to be safe with campfires and other sources of ignition due to the abundance of dry brush, grasses and trees."

For additional information, the public is encouraged to call 702-515-5000.
