By DON McDERMOTT3-A playoffs the issue, as Trojans face the CrusadersPVT
LAS VEGAS -- The last name -- Done -- is familiar, but it's not Cameron, the multi-talented athlete who played quarterback for the football team and was a point guard on two state championship basketball teams at Faith Lutheran High School here. Max Done is a 5-foot-10, 155-pound junior quarterback who has completed 50 of 94 passes for 689 yards and six touchdowns (with six interceptions) for the Crusaders, who today host Pahrump Valley in a pivotal Southern Nevada Class 3-A League football game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Both teams are 2-4 in all games, while the Trojans lost their only league start at Mesquite Virgin Valley, 36-7. A week earlier, Faith had stunned the Bulldogs 31-15, but last Friday, Faith was shocked 37-20 by Overton Moapa Valley's Pirates, who find themselves leading the league. Virgin Valley (1-1, 5-2) is at Boulder City (0-1, 1-5), while Moapa Valley (2-0, 3-3) travels to Legacy, a first-year Las Vegas high school. Last week, Pahrump Valley was victimized by a Virgin Valley offense that generated 439 yards, including 217 on 22 rushes by Casimoreo Zarate. Because of that performance, Zarate moved into the lead in nevprep.com's Greater Nevada rushing list. He has 993 yards and 12 touchdowns on 140 carries for the Bulldogs, who have the No. 11-ranked quarterback in Doug Hafen (45-for-84, 680 yards, 10 TDs). Other players to watch for in the Crusaders' lineup: halfback Steve McCall, a multi-talented senior who can play a number of positions for the offensive unit); Conner Maloney, a 6-4, 200 senior wideout who can also play quarterback, and Chris Schulte, a 6-2, 205 senior field goal and extra-point kicker and defensive back. In the last nine quarters played by the Pahrump Valley offense, senior tailback Rocky Spencer has been the only consistent performer. He has rushed for 488 yards in those nine quarters, and scored the lone touchdown in the Trojans' loss to Virgin Valley. The Trojans' defense, except for a five-quarter run against Yucca Valley, Calif., and Legacy, when it surrendered only 14 points, has been under fire. Pahrump Valley has given up 215 points in six starts, while the offense has generated just 79 points. Tonight's game is huge for both teams' playoff chances. Faith is 1-1 in the league, with Boulder City its only remaining 3-A game. Pahrump Valley will be at home Oct. 20 to play Moapa Valley. It's the Homecoming game for the Trojans, who close the season at the PVHS stadium Oct. 26 against Boulder City. The team that steps up tonight will have an unhindered view of its chances to earn a berth in the Southern 3-A playoffs Nov. 4; only the top four teams qualify, with No. 1 hosting No. 4 and No. 3 traveling to take on No. 2. The winners advance to the state semifinals Nov. 11. |
