Alamo winning streak now 19 games

SPECIAL TO THE PVT

Pahranagat Valley Alamo's football team played without three starters during its 56-6 victory over visiting Las Vegas Calvary Chapel Friday night, in a Southern Class A Division game, the Web site, nevprep.com, reported.

The players were not suspended because of bad grades, for getting into a fight, or for any "violation of team rules," which in most programs translates into drinking or using drugs. They were handed the one-game suspensions because they came back from lunch 10 minutes late one day last week.

That's the level of structure that exists at Alamo, and that structure is one reason the Panthers have become the No. 1-ranked 8-man team in the country.

"The (suspended) kids understand," Alamo coach Ken Higbee said. "They know it (being late for anything without a valid reason) was unacceptable, and hopefully it taught them something. Part of life is taking responsibility."

The starters' absence didn't make much difference against Calvary Chapel, aside from the fact the Lions (0-1 in league, 2-3 overall) became the first team this year to score against Alamo's starting defense.

The defending state champions (2-0 in league, 7-0 overall) now have outscored their opponents 386-67 this season and 1,030-157 during their current 19-game winning streak.

Calvary Chapel tied the game 6-6 before Alamo scored 14 points later in the first quarter, and coasted to the victory while invoking the Nevada 1-A's 45-point mercy rule for the fifth time in seven games this season. The game ended with four minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Quarterback Kobee Wade ran for 111 yards and a touchdown on seven attempts, William Vea rushed for 103 yards and three scores on 11 carries, and Jared Wadsworth had 84 yards on six tries. He also had four catches for 87 yards and a TD, and Vea had three receptions for 46 yards and two scores. Wade completed 9 of 12 passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns.

The Panthers' next game is at Keystone Academy (1-4) Saturday.

They conclude their regular season against unbeaten Laughlin (6-0) Oct. 20 in a game that will decide the Southern 1-A title, then have a week off before the start of the playoffs

Laughlin kept its unbeaten record intact, but not before visiting Las Vegas Mountain View Christian gave the Cougars a 20-12 scare in a Southern 1-A game Friday night in Laughlin.
