Family to Family October calendar

The October class schedule for Family to Family Connection, located at 160 S. Emery, is as follows:

Today -- Nevada Early Intervention developmental play group, 11 a.m. to noon.

Tuesday -- Teen Parent Day, 2 p.m.

Thursday -- Family vehicle safety program class (registration is required and there is a fee).

Oct. 20 -- CPR class (registration is required and there is a fee).

Oct. 27 -- Closed for Nevada Day.

Oct. 30 -- Halloween safety, 1 p.m. (free glow sticks).

Oct. 31 -- WIC, PAT and Family to Family Halloween Day, 1 p.m. (wear costumes).

Salvation Army toy distribution

The Salvation Army is accepting Thanksgiving and Christmas food and toy applications from Monday through Dec. 15 only.

Applicants must have a working phone number and proof of residence. Toy applications are for children from newborns to 14 years old.

Red Hatters book discussion group

The Pahrump Valley Red Hatters book discussion group will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St.

Cookies, coffee and tea will be offered at this Red Hat hoot, open to all Red Hatters. There is a $1 fee with half going to the library. Bring your favorite book or listen to others discuss their favorite books.

United Way Oktoberfest

The United Way of Pioneer Territory will host its annual Oktoberfest from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Honeysuckle Park.

Come out for some bratwurst, sauerkraut and polka music. A beer stein competition will be held at 4 p.m.

Thanksgiving, Christmas distribution

The Pahrump Family Resource Center (a No To Abuse program) and the Salvation Army are working together for Thanksgiving, Christmas distribution.

Sign-ups will be held from Monday until the end of October by appointment only at the resource center, 621 S. Blagg (between Highway 372 and Wilson). Documentation needed is picture ID and one month's wages at the appointment.

An open house benefit for the Crystal Valley Fire Department will be held Oct. 20, 21, 22 and Nov. 11.

Oct. 21 -- breakfast, 10-11 a.m.; cook your own steak.

The Rotary Club is sponsoring a candidate's night at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Saddle West Hotel & Casino.

Nye County will host a Soil Disclosure Ordinance workshop for realtors from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Bob Ruud Community Center, 150 N. Highway 160.

Fall Into Style 2006

The second annual Fall Into Style 2006, presented by Dore Foskey, will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Nugget.

Come and meet Pahrump Valley hair stylists, nail technicians and beauty suppliers and enjoy fashions (fashion show begins at 2:30 p.m.).

Pahrump Valley High School students have the opportunity to consult with professional hair and makeup artists, have a makeover and a photo taken for $30, which also includes the admission fee. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling the numbers below.

General admission is $15 and $7 for children under 9. All donations benefit Nathan Adelson Hospice.

VFW October calendar

The October calendar of events for the VFW Post 10054 on Homestead Road is as follows: domestic beer $1.25, bottle beer $1.50, draft $1.25 every Thursday; and full menu lunches served by Dennis from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

No dinners or breakfasts will be served until further notice.

Financial needs workshop

Nathan Adelson Hospice, in conjunction with Nevada Federal Credit Union and Pahrump Valley Apartments, will hold a no-cost basic financial needs workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday in the recreation room at Pahrump Valley Apartments, 2151 Pahrump Valley Blvd., corner of Pahrump Valley and Calvada boulevards.

The workshop is for those who want help with budgeting and avoiding fraud and identity theft. Reservations must be made today as space is limited.

Nye Communities Coalition meeting

The Nye Communities Coalition 3 meeting, hosted by the Southern Task Force, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Boys and Girls Club, 2210 Mt. Charleston (one block south of the high school on the corner of Rodeo and Mt. Charleston).

Willi Baer, retired executive director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Las Vegas, is the scheduled speaker. She will address the issue of "strategic planning for non-profits." In addition, Loyd Platson will discuss "the grand scheme of the strategic prevention framework," and Laura Boggs will cater a Mexican food lunch.

Bell ringer positions

The Salvation Army is accepting applications for bell ringer positions as of Sunday. Interested parties may apply at the Salvation Army office on 2101 E. Calvada Blvd., located inside the Job Connect building Monday through Thursday.

All applicants must have transportation and a phone number in order to qualify, must be able to pass a background check, be clean-cut and well mannered, and able to work eight hours on their feet. The rate of pay is from $6 to $7 per hour.

Guns & Hoses flag football fundraiser

Nye Country Sheriff's Department and Pahrump Fire and Rescue will hold a Guns & Hoses flag football fundraiser to support the SafePlace program from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Pahrump High School football field.

Admission is $6, with free admission for children under 10. Bring canned food to help support the Salvation Army Thanksgiving food giveaway and get $1 off admission. Tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce.

The event is to help give a giant kick off to help support the SafePlace program, which provides immediate help and support to youth in crisis.

New PAC committee

A new Pahrump Arts Council committee is forming a kind of "show and tell" group of artists willing to share their art, ideas and camaraderie.

Christmas bazaar

The Amargosa Valley Artist Guild is sponsoring a Christmas bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 11 at the community center, 811 E. Amargosa Farm Road.

Country music association party

The Nevada Country Music Association invites the community to its Halloween party fundraiser at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Stagestop Casino, 100 W. Stagecoach Road (at Blagg Road).

There will be a costume contest, door prizes and a raffle to win a slot machine. Tickets can be purchased at the Stagestop. All proceeds will benefit the Pahrump Chapter of the Nevada Country Music Association.

Amateur Radio license exams

Examinations for Amateur Radio licenses will be held at noon Oct. 21 at the Pahrump Elks, 2280 E. Basin Ave.

Examinations for all classes of licenses will be available. Please bring to the exam session: identification, one photo ID or 2 non-photo IDs; Social Security Number or FCC registration number; original and a copy of any amateur radio license and any CSCEs; and $14 for the exam fee.

No appointment is necessary, but notification a few days earlier than the exam date is required for handicaps needing special assistance.

Painting in the park

Pahrump Arts Council's "Painting in the Park-A Day at the Lake" will be held Oct. 21 at Terrible's Lakeside.

The community is invited to the Art Walk, which will be held from 8 a.m. until dusk. PAC members will have their easels, canvasses and paints set up in various areas around the lake. This is an opportunity talk with PAC members about techniques, style of painting, etc.

Toys for Tots, No to Abuse fundraiser

A fundraiser to benefit Toys for Tots and No to Abuse will be held Oct. 21 at Horizon Academy in Amargosa Valley.

Sponsored by the Horizon Academy Student Council, the event will feature raffles, a car wash, a baked goods auction and a lot of Mexican food. Lunch is free for anyone who donates an unwrapped toy.

In addition to the fundraiser, Horizon Academy will conduct an open house to give the public a chance to tour the campus and talk to staff and students.

Both events will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the baked goods auction to take place at 1 p.m. Fundraising events will be held at the academy's south parking lot, located on the corner of Highway 373 and Mecca Road.

United Way holding volunteers banquet

The United Way of Pioneer Territory will hold its annual "Cheers for Volunteers" banquet, a recognition of volunteer work performed by our citizens, Nov. 3 at the Saddle West Hotel and Casino.

There will be a no-host bar at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., and the award ceremony at 8 p.m. The cost for dinner is $30 or $240 for a table of eight.

The nominations forms for volunteers have been distributed to many organizations, but may also be obtained at the Chamber of Commerce or by calling 751-2400 and leaving a message.

Teen Night

Writing contest

The Oasis Writers Guild Annual is seeking submissions of short stories using the title, "It's hopeless, but not serious," for its short story contest.
