SPECIAL TO THE PVT
CLASS 3-A FOOTBALL Moapa Valley stops Crusaders
Like a lot of major league baseball managers, Moapa Valley football coach Brent Lewis has waited a long time for somebody to pitch a complete game. On Friday night, just about all of his players did so as the Pirates took over first place in the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League with a 37-20 victory against Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, the Web site, nevprep.com, reported. "I'd say that we played our first complete game of the season," Lewis said, after the Pirates improved to 2-0 in league and 3-3 overall. "Our kids did a great job of putting aside all the distractions of homecoming and played a terrific game. On both sides of the ball we were the aggressors, and we spread the ball around so everyone got involved in this game." After a scoreless first quarter during which Moapa Valley had long drives extinguished by penalties and a fumble, the Pirates took a 14-6 lead at halftime. Faith Lutheran (1-1, 2-4) scored on its first second-half possession to tie the game, but Kyle Ozaki returned the kickoff 85 yards to put Moapa Valley ahead to stay, and the Pirates, after recovering a squib kickoff, promptly scored again. Moapa Valley totaled 369 yards on total offense to the Crusaders' 249 as sophomore running back Brad Weiss rushed for 194 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries. Quarterback Max Jenkins, also a sophomore, completed 7 of 15 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Moapa Valley goes to Las Vegas Legacy, which is 0-2 against Southern 3-A opponents. The Longhorns, 1-4, lost 15-13 to Boulder City Friday, after bowing 29-14 at Pahrump Valley. Faith Lutheran is at home against Pahrump Valley (0-1, 2-4), which fell 36-7 at Mesquite Virgin Valley Friday. |
