SPECIAL TO THE PVT
NORTHERN 3-A FOOTBALL Sparks wins; Truckee, Dayton in key game
One enormous question mark hovered over the Sparks defense Friday night during the Railroaders' 28-0 Northern Nevada Class 3-A football victory over Spring Creek here Friday night. To wit: That was the defense that lost 37-34 to Fernley a week earlier? "We came out a little flat in that game and we messed up some coverages, and they got us when we did," Sparks coach Rob Kittrell told the Web site, nevprep.com, Friday night. It was after Alex Toler threw three touchdown passes to Zack Quilici and the Railroaders snared three interceptions and sacked Spring Creek quarterback Michael Royer six times. Toler passed for 248 yards and Quilici caught 10 passes for 122 yards as the Railroaders improved to 1-1 in league and 5-1 overall, and moved within one victory of assuring themselves their first winning season in 10 years. Sparks, which hasn't won a state title since 1948, also moved closer to earning a position -- and perhaps home-field advantage -- in the four-team play-in round that will determine the six-team Northern 3-A's two representatives in the state playoffs. Spring Creek, on the other hand, is 0-2 in league (4-2 overall) a year after posting the school's first-ever perfect regular season before losing to two-time state champion Truckee, Calif., in the state playoffs. If the Spartans don't beat visiting Fernley -- which lost 54-21 at home to Truckee Friday night -- Friday night, the Spartans could be in danger of missing the play-in round completely. The Railroaders limited Spring Creek quarterback Michael Royer to 10 completions in 26 attempts for 104 yards. Quilici, who came into the game with 21 receptions, got most of his 10 catches on quick passes to the flat when Spring Creek's cornerbacks were cushioning, and on "flood" patterns on which he slithered into medium-range seams as the other wideouts in the Railroaders' three- and four-receiver formations took the Spring Creek defensive backs deep. The Spartans maintained possession for 11 plays over six minutes and advanced to the Sparks 38 with the help of three penalties against the Railroaders, but Quilici quelled the threat with an interception. Sparks then paraded 68 yards the other way to score its final touchdown, on an 8-yard collaboration between Toler and Quilici with 2:15 left in the third quarter. Friday, Sparks will host Winnemucca Lowry (1-5 with its only win coming against 2-A Ely White Pine) and Dayton and Truckee, the league's two unbeaten teams, square off the following afternoon at Truckee. |
