New Lutheran church pastor The community is welcome to attend the installation of Rev. Lois Shuart as Paster of Saved By Grace Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. Sunday at Mt. Charleston Elementary School on Idaho Street. Bell ringer positions The Salvation Army is accepting applications for bell ringer positions as of Sunday. Interested parties may apply at the Salvation Army office on 2101 E. Calvada Blvd., located inside the Job Connect building Monday through Thursday. All applicants must have transportation and a phone number in order to qualify, must be able to pass a background check, be clean-cut and well mannered, and able to work eight hours on their feet. Library reading program The Pahrump Community Library winter reading program for children will run Tuesday through Dec. 19. The theme will be "Hop Into Reading with Froggy and His Friends." Red Hatters book discussion group The Pahrump Valley Red Hatters book discussion group will be held at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St. Cookies, coffee and tea will be offered at this Red Hat hoot, open to all Red Hatters. Aging services town meeting The Division for Aging Services, a part of the State of Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, will hold at town meeting from 1 to 2:30 p.m. today at the Pahrump Senior Center, 1370 W. Basin Ave. The division will solicit comments for the next state plan for services for Nevada's elders. Family to Family October calendar The October class schedule for Family to Family Connection, located at 160 S. Emery, is as follows: Thursday -- Dealing with stress in the family, 3:30 p.m. Friday -- Nevada Early Intervention developmental play group, 11 a.m. to noon. Tuesday -- Teen Parent Day, 2 p.m. Oct. 19 -- Family vehicle safety program class (registration is required and there is a fee). Oct. 20 -- CPR class (registration is required and there is a fee). Oct. 27 -- Closed for Nevada Day. Oct. 30 -- Halloween safety, 1 p.m. (free glow sticks). Oct. 31 -- WIC, PAT and Family to Family Halloween Day, 1 p.m. (wear costumes). Blood donors desperately needed United Blood Services is in dire need of blood donors for the blood drive scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Pahrump Moose Lodge, 1100 East Second St. Another blood drive is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the LDS Church. The blood drive at the lodge is in imminent danger of being canceled due to only two appointments made so far. However, the blood drive will take place as scheduled if more donors make appointments to give blood. United Blood Services provides 250 to 300 units of blood to hospitals in Pahrump and Las Vegas everyday. VFW October calendar The October calendar of events for the VFW Post 10054 on Homestead Road is as follows: domestic beer $1.25, bottle beer $1.50, draft $1.25 every Thursday; breakfast served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Sunday, $4 donation; and full menu lunches served by Dennis from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. United Way Oktoberfest The United Way of Pioneer Territory will host its annual Oktoberfest from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Honeysuckle Park. Come out for some bratwurst, sauerkraut and polka music. A beer stein competition will be held at 4 p.m. Photography art show The Pahrump Arts Council will hold a reception for the installation of a photography show from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the Nye County Courthouse. The community is invited to come to the reception and see the photography show, "Altered Landscapes," which features a signature collection of 24 contemporary landscape photos from the Nevada Museum of Art. The show will run through Dec. 13. Curated by the Nevada Museum of Art, "Altered Landscapes" is part of the Nevada Arts Council Nevada Touring Initiative Program, which is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nevada State Legislature. Financial needs workshop Nathan Adelson Hospice, in conjunction with Nevada Federal Credit Union and Pahrump Valley Apartments, will hold a no-cost basic financial needs workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday in the recreation room at Pahrump Valley Apartments, 2151 Pahrump Valley Blvd., corner of Pahrump Valley and Calvada boulevards. The workshop is for those who want help with budgeting and avoiding fraud and identity theft. Reservations must be made by Friday as space is limited. Willi Baer, retired executive director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Las Vegas, is the scheduled speaker. She will address the issue of "strategic planning for non-profits." In addition, Loyd Platson will discuss "the grand scheme of the strategic prevention framework," and Laura Boggs will cater a Mexican food lunch.
