OVERTON -- The Rosemary Clarke Middle School volleyball teams traveled to Moapa Valley to compete in a tournament hosted by Mack Lyon Middle School. The A Team continued its dominant play to bring home the championship.

The Shark A Team split with Alamo (25-16 and 16-25) in the opening match, but rebounded to sweep the next match with Faith Lutheran (25-12, 25-16).

The squad from Mack Lyon hung tough for one game before falling 26-24. The Sharks got serious to complete the sweep with a 25-11 score and secured a spot in a one-game championship shootout.

Faith Lutheran came out of the preliminary games as the second seed. In the final game neither team could sustain any lead as the Sharks were sluggish being forced to play back-to-back games in a virtual sweat box of a gymnasium.

The Sharks fell behind early at 2-5, but fought back to knot the score at 7-7, then fall behind 7-10. The score bounced back and forth before the Sharks took a brief lead at 20-17. The Crusaders rallied to close to 22-21 before tying the score at 24.

The turning point came with a battle at the net won by the Sharks' Alyson Kunzi. Casey Scheller served the game winner for the 26-24 victory. The Sharks improved their overall match record to 9-1 on the season and have won 20 of 26 games played.

Team leaders included Ashley Lindgren and Alyson Kunzi, who shared setting/passing duties leading to numerous kills by Scheller, Taylor Hill and Chrissy Seliga. The Sharks were aided by consistent serving led by Scheller, Lindgren, Kunzi and Toria Dance.

The Shark B Team won six of eight games in pool play, setting up a one game playoff with Faith Lutheran. Faith Lutheran started quickly in the final game before winning 15-25. Although the Sharks won three of five games against the Crusaders, the odd format used cost the Sharks the championship.

The C Team likewise was denied a chance at its division championship by the format used. The youngest Sharks beat Alamo in two matches during pool play, but found the Panthers advancing to the final match by virtue of the total number of points scored by the teams. The Sharks posted a 2-2 record during pool play.

The Sharks will be back in action at home today against Beatty, before traveling to Faith Lutheran for a tournament Saturday.

EDITOR'S NOTE -- No Rosemary Clarke Middle School football game has been reported to the Pahrump Valley Times this season.
