Candidates night The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans will hold a candidates night at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at the VFW Post, 4651 S. Homestead Road. Safe Place seeking volunteers Safe Place, an organization providing immediate help and support to youth in crisis, needs at least seven volunteers as soon as possible to help transport children and assist with administrative duties (filing, answering the phone, etc.). Model search pageant The Baby Contest Model Search Pageant for girls and boys will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Pahrump Valley High School cafeteria. Bell ringer positions The Salvation Army is accepting applications for bell ringer positions as of Oct. 15. Interested parties may apply at the Salvation Army office on 2101 E. Calvada Blvd., located inside the Job Connect building Monday through Thursday. All applicants must have transportation and a phone number in order to qualify, must be able to pass a background check, be clean-cut and well mannered, and able to work eight hours on their feet. United Way Oktoberfest The United Way of Pioneer Territory will host its annual Oktoberfest from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at Honeysuckle Park. Come out for some bratwurst, sauerkraut and polka music. Photography art show The Pahrump Arts Council will hold a reception for the installation of a photography show from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Nye County Courthouse. The community is invited to come to the reception and see the photography show, "Altered Landscapes," which features a signature collection of 24 contemporary landscape photos from the Nevada Museum of Art. The show will run through Dec. 13. Curated by the Nevada Museum of Art, "Altered Landscapes" is part of the Nevada Arts Council Nevada Touring Initiative Program, which is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nevada State Legislature. Writing contest The Oasis Writers Guild Annual is seeking submissions of short stories using the title, "It's hopeless, but not serious," for its short story contest. Teacher mini-grants The Pahrump Valley Rotary awards mini-grants, ranging from $50 to $250 to teachers of grades K-12, for special classroom projects at schools within Pahrump. Mini-grants provide funds to innovative teachers who want to develop ideas and implement them to enrich students' classroom experience.
