By MARY BALDASANODance teacher walks the lineSPECIAL TO THE PVT
Have you ever wanted to get on the dance floor only to find it's full of folks all lined up doing the same style of dance? Well, it's called line dancing, it's been popular for years, and Teri Rogers is Pahrump's teacher. Rogers holds a master's degree in physical education and teaches health professions at the Community College of Southern Nevada (Pahrump). She has taught aerobics for 20 years and dancing for seven. She moved to Pahrump from Las Vegas with husband Don 7-and-half-years ago. She is a member of a local Red Hat Society as well as Victorian Women. She is also a clog-dancing enthusiast and enjoys both that and line dancing. She began locally by showing another teacher how to enjoy the latter style and then decided to teach others. As a fan of line dancing, Rogers decided to do a little research on what new forms were being done, so she visited places where line dancing is popular. She found that there were a lot of new dances out there, learned them and set up classes at the First Move Fitness gym on the corner of Loop Road and Commercial Street which offers both beginning and advanced levels. There is also a class available at Artesia. Classes average 15 students, with some increases when the snowbirds are in town. When preparing performances, Rogers carefully choreographs the steps to ensure a great show. Some of her group will perform at the Senior Olympics. Her classes are more sophisticated than most and are not the same old type of line dancing seen in earlier years. Frankie Kaaz, 81, says she loves line dancing "because I like to dance. I enjoy the exercise and activity it offers." Kaaz and her husband moved to Pahrump from Reno three years ago. They have been married 62 years -- yes, that's 62 years. "Teri is absolutely the best instructor. Everyone should try it, you get to meet nice people and have fun," said Kaaz. Monique Mauro from Paris, France, moved to Pahrump in October 2000. "I joined the group in January because I love to dance. I didn't know the dances or the music. I had to learn, but it's been great fun," said Mauro. She loves Pahrump because most people are really nice. Mauro lends a helping hand to new members of the class. If interested in joining the fun, you can just show up at one of the classes, or call Teri Rogers at 775-764-0006. |
