SPECIAL TO THE PVT
Laughlin scores 81 against Keystone
Laughlin became the first Nevada football team in four years to surpass the 80-point mark Friday, when the Cougars overwhelmed visiting Sandy Valley Keystone Academy 81-40 in a Class A Southern Division opener for both schools, the Web site, nevprep.com reported. Cory Cook rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns on three carries, Mack Brown scored three times -- on a 75-yard kickoff return, a 65-yard interception return and a 17-yard run -- and Joey Bailey ran for 96 yards and a score as the Cougars (5-0) accumulated their 81-point total despite the fact a running clock was used most of the second half. Laughlin, which plays at nationally No. 3-ranked Alamo Oct. 20, is the first Nevada team to score more than 80 points in a game since Lake Mead went for 88 points against Mountain View in 2002. Eureka and Smith Valley put up 90 and 82 points, respectively, against Pyramid Lake in 2001. The state record is 106 points by Coleville in a 6-man game against a Nye County school, Gabbs, in 1970. In all, the 80-point mark has been reached or eclipsed 28 times, according to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association record book. The previous high this season came in Eureka's 74-28 victory against Round Mountain. |
