SPECIAL TO THE PVT

Pahranagat Valley Alamo's 54-7 non-league victory over Carlin Sept. 22 apparently had more of an impact on the Panthers' national power rating than any other win during their current 18-game streak, the Web site, nevprep.com, reported.

The defending Nevada Class A state champions, who were 11th among 8-man teams in the previous week's MaxPreps.com national power rankings, jumped all the way to third -- behind only Mohawk of Marcola, Ore., and Christian Heritage of Del City, Okla. -- this week, before their 52-20 conquest of Las Vegas Mountain View Christian Friday.

Carlin had been ranked 12th nationally, so Alamo's victory enabled the Panthers to make the largest jump of any 8-man team. . The Panthers (6-0) had dropped two places last week despite beating Eureka, the same team Alamo defeated in the state finals last year.

"It (the national notoriety) is fun," said Alamo coach Ken Higbee after his team defeated Mountain View. "I'd expect it to go down now (after the relatively small but nevertheless deceptive margin of victory over a 3-3 Mountain View team) but it was 20-0 after the first quarter and 40-0 at halftime, and it was 52-8 before their starters scored twice against our freshmen."

During its 18-game win streak, Alamo has outscored its opponents 974-151, and this season's margin is 330-61. Four of Alamo's wins have come in games shortened by the Nevada 1-A's 45-point mercy rule; the only teams to take the Panthers the full 48 minutes are Mountain View and Wells, which lost 42-0 in the Panthers' season opener.

MaxPreps.com has combined 6-man, 8-man and 9-man national rankings. Alamo is No. 9 in those ratings, while Mohawk is No. 5 and Christian Heritage is No. 8. The No. 1-ranked team in non-11-man football is Rule, Texas, which plays 6-man football.

Higbee was asked if he and his players have given much thought to the possibility of winning a mythical national championship.

"Let's put it this way," he said. "We were up 52-8 tonight with no seniors on the field, and we kept the starters in against Carlin because that has been their only chance to play against (strong) competition this season. For a whole game, I would put this team up against any team in 8-man football ... and as I've said all along, they're even better kids than they are football players."

Against Mountain View, William Vea rushed for 64 yards and two touchdowns on five carries and sophomore Brady Whipple went for 51 yards and two scores and caught five passes for 51 yards and two more TDs as the Panthers' starters came out of the game early in the second quarter.

Taylor Poulsen, who is being groomed as Alamo's quarterback for 2007, went 11 for 19 for 152 yards and a touchdown, and Kenny Turley had six receptions for 127 yards.

Mountain View, which lost 36-28 to Tonopah in its season opener Sept. 2, was led by Andrew Ogris, who ran for 119 yards -- most of them on two hook-and-ladder plays late in the game -- and scored a touchdown. He also participated in 11 tackles.
