Hemenway Park a good place for observation of the bighorn

SPECIAL TO THE PVT

Wildlife viewing is becoming more and more popular, according to a report from the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

One place to view some of Nevada's most striking animals is at Hemenway Park in Boulder City.

A herd of approximately 200 desert bighorn sheep live in the mountains near the park, and regularly come down to water and feed. The park's turf grass provides fresh grazing and an opportunity to find moisture.

The residents whose homes overlook Hemenway Park have taken a keen interest in the visiting sheep and seek to protect them as their own. The sheep can be seen right in amongst picnic tables and playground equipment.

The viewing is best accomplished at a distance, however. Unaware visitors may be tempted to approach the sheep, as they appear to be tame. But rams may possibly charge and ewes with lambs are especially protective.

It should be remembered that these animals are wild and are only supplementing their sustenance. Their natural environment is in the harsh desert mountains.

Over time, the sheep have become used to visiting the green park, especially in times of drought.

This can be harmful to them because it hampers their wild instincts, both in securing food and water as well as compromising their sense of danger. And, as with all wild animals, they require space to roam. Crowding them in an urban setting is not good advice.
