EDITOR'S NOTE: The Pahrump Valley Times will present a full-page pictorial in the Friday edition.

Consider these performances in the 2006 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo in McCullough Arena, during the Pahrump Fall Festival ...

An 83-point bareback ride ...

An 8.3-second tie-down roping victory ...

A steer wrestled to the ground in 3.9 seconds ...

Two 17.23-second barrel racing successes ...

A 5.2-second team roping feat ...

Two 87-point saddle bronc rides ...

An 88-point ride edged an 87 in bull riding ... and to heighten the excitement, a bull tried to climb the six-foot competition barrier.

The Friday and Saturday go-arounds drew their usual capacity crowds, and the Sunday attendance was the largest it has been in several years, thanks to overcast skies and comfortable temperatures. And even the media was well represented, with about four times the usual number of press photographers working the fences for cool angles.

The total payout was $35,673.98, with more than 270 cowboys and cowgirls entering the three-day event -- one of seven contested within 500 miles of Pahrump last weekend. The hectic action, of course, was to be expected, considering that the National Finals Rodeo will be contested in the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas Nov. 30-Dec. 9 -- and there are still competitors after a top 15 ranking in the PRCA standings.

The winners were:

Cody Demers, who rode his horse bareback for eight seconds and earned 83 points, plus a payoff of $1,140. James Sursa and Kyle Bowers had 82-point rides and pocketed $855 and $570, respectively.

Nathan Bayes and Clint Cannon tied for fourth with 81 points each; the payoff was $142.50 each.

In tie-down roping, Evan Arnold used up only 8.3 seconds for the win, worth $1,515.25. Second at 8.4 seconds was J.D. Miller, who received a check worth $1,254.

Mike Johnson (8.5, $992.75) was third; Cash Myers and Ryan Yamauchi tied for fourth at 8.7 and received $600.87 each. Nate Baldwin finished at 9.0, worth $261.25.

Two cowboys -- Luke Branquino and Brook Colledge -- had the same time in steer wrestling: 3.9 seconds. Branquino earned $1,597.90, while Colledge's payoff was $1,322.40.

Brad McGilchrist was third in 4.1 seconds, giving him a $1,046.90 check. Tied for fourth at 4.2 seconds and getting paid $633.65 each were Clint Robinson and Ryan Scott. Sixth (4.3, $275.50) was Levi Rosser.

Jolee Lautaret, a crowd favorite whenever she appears at the PRCA rodeo in Pahrump, shared the victory in barrel racing with a 17.23-second ride -- a performance matched by Lyndee Stairs. They each received $898.56.

LeKelse Dansie had a 17.29-second tour to finish third and pocket $691.20.

Tied for fifth were Dolly Lauteret and Katy Varian at 17.43 and $414.72 each.

Kelly Strohmenger was seventh at 17.57, worth $276.48, and completing the top 10 were Jan Duquette (17.61, $184.32), Kali Jo Parker (17.66, $138.24) and Sara Kieckhafen (17.74, $92.16)

In team roping, Tadd Thomas and Tracy Larson earned $1,487.70 each for their 5.2-second collaboration. At 5.3 was the tandem of Adam Banuelos and Austin Adams, who were paid $1,231.20 each.

Also paid off were Jake Hannum-Jade Willis (5.4, $974.70 each); George Ishman-Randy Stanley (5.6), $588.95 each); Josi Young-Kirt Jones (5.6, $588.95 each), and Jason Williams-Kyon Sayer (5.7, $256.50 each).

There were four 80-plus point rides in saddle broncs; three were Sunday. Cody Taton, on Fire Fly, scored 87 points, while Steven Dent, on Paper Tiger, duplicated that effort. Each was paid $1,088.72.

Completing the 80-point ride list were J.J. Elsher (84, $675.45) and Matthew Morrison (80, $450.30). A 79-point ride by Anthony Bello was worth a fifth-place payout of $262.67. At 77 points was James Mann, who pocketed a $187.62 payoff.

Almost as outstanding was the depth of talent in bull riding, where Tag Elliott (88), Wesley Silcox (87) and Mark Fisher (84) surpassed the 80-point barrier. Elliott's score was worth $1,144.27, while Silcox earned $866.87 and Fisher $624.15.

Steve Woolsley was fourth with a 79-point ride worth $416.10. Fifth was 2005 champion Jake Wade, who scored a 78-point trip and a $242.72 payoff. Sixth was Zack Elliott, who recorded a 75-point ride and a $173.37 check.

Several competitors were on the doctors' releases and draw outs lists, including tie-down ropers Jade Stoddard, Pete Jones, Mike George, Ryan Likely, Scott McCullough, and Ben Araug; steer wrestler Brett Ellis; barrel racers Jackie Dubew and DeAnn St. Andrew; team ropers Paul Mullins, Ryan Zurcher, Trampus Quarnberg, Brad Freeland, Dan Williams, Ryan Sayer, and Jade Stoddard; saddle bronc riders Scott Miller, Cody Norwedel, Ira Slagowski, James Willert, and Jordan Furnish, and bull rider David Matthews.
