Genealogical society meeting Thursday

The Pahrump Nevada Genealogical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the multi-purpose room of the LDS church on Wilson and West.

Art show at courthouse

The Pahrump Arts Council installed a mixed media, open show at the Nye County Courthouse. The show will run through Friday.

A free home buyer's seminar will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Pahrump Valley Library, 701 East St.

VFW October calendar

The October calendar of events for the VFW Post 10054 on Homestead Road is as follows: domestic beer $1.25, bottle beer $1.50, draft $1.25 every Thursday; breakfast served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Sunday, $4 donation; and full menu lunches served by Dennis from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Dinners:

Friday -- American Legion sweet and sour pork.

Oct. 13 -- Dinner with Dennis.

Oct. 20 -- VFW Ladies Auxiliary meat loaf, 5-7 p.m.

Oct. 27 -- Early bird dinner (life membership drawing), 5-7 p.m.

All dinners are $6 and served from 4-7 p.m., unless otherwise noted.

Kiwanis yard sale

The Kiwanis Club will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the far end of the parking lot at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

The sale is being held to assist two citizens in need of handicap ramps and to help the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army needs can goods and non-perishable items.

Please donate food items and clean, workable items to the sale. Donated items may be brought at 7 a.m. the day of the sale.

The Kiwanis Club is a 501(c)3 organization.

Loan clinic for businesses

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), along with a number of its partners, will host a loan clinic for start-up and established businesses from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Great Basin College, Room 107, 551 E. Calvada Blvd.

Free technical assistance on loan applications will be provided. Attendees can apply for a Community Express Loan or obtain information on the 7(a) Loan Guaranty of SBA 504 loan programs.

Cinderella Girls model workshops

Cinderella Girls will hold free model workshops from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Oct. 17 at the Bob Ruud Community Center for the upcoming pageant on Oct. 20.

Financial needs workshop

Nathan Adelson Hospice, in conjunction with Nevada Federal Credit Union and Pahrump Valley Apartments, will hold a no-cost basic financial needs workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 17 in the recreation room at Pahrump Valley Apartments, 2151 Pahrump Valley Blvd., corner of Pahrump Valley and Calvada boulevards.

The workshop is for those who want help with budgeting and avoiding fraud and identity theft. Reservations must be made by Oct. 13 as space is limited.

Poetry at the library

Pahrump Arts Council's "Poetry at the Library" group will meet for the first time from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at 701 East St.

The group will meet the first Saturday of the month thereafter.

The South Valley Baptist Church invites everyone to its homecoming at 3 p.m. Sunday at 7050 Homestead Road.

Teacher mini-grants

The Pahrump Valley Rotary awards mini-grants, ranging from $50 to $250 to teachers of grades K-12, for special classroom projects at schools within Pahrump.

Mini-grants provide funds to innovative teachers who want to develop ideas and implement them to enrich students' classroom experience.

Applications are available at the counselor's office of each school or call 513-2536 to have one faxed.

The application deadline is Friday.

The Pahrump Community Choir is holding weekly rehearsals at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays at Rosemary Clarke Middle School, 4201 N. Blagg.

Artists for 2007

The Pahrump Arts Council is calling all artists to participate in art shows to be held in 2007.

Artists may call Doris at 537-6136, beginning in November, for one-person shows at the Senior Center; Bernie at 727-9112 for one or two-person shows at the library and mixed media, open shows at the County Courthouse; and Duane at 727-6035 for mixed-media, open shows at Charleston Peak RV Park.

Help for veterans

There is an office in Pahrump and in Tonopah where veterans can receive help in using their earned military benefits.

The Pahrump office is in the Nevada Job Connect facility in the Calvada Eye building and the Tonopah office is in the Nye Regional Medical Center on Main Street.

Ken Shockley and his staff are there fulltime to assist veterans in obtaining the benefits they earned.
