The playoffs have already started last Thursday for the Pahrump Valley High School football team.

"I told the boys before we played Boulder City that it was 'one or done' for us," said Brian Hug, the Trojans' coach. Beat Boulder City and the Trojans would advance to the Southern Nevada Class 3-A regionals. Lose, and they would have spent Monday turning in their uniforms and equipment.

The Trojans responded, rolling up 422 yards rushing and 548 yards total offense in a 34-14 victory against the Eagles, who spoiled their own chances by losing three fumbles, offsetting an offensive output of 462 yards. The 1,010 yards in total offense came less than a week after Overton Moapa Valley and the Trojans churned out almost 800 yards in the Pirates' 56-39 league victory.

Ironically, the Trojans will get another shot at the Pirates. In a first-round regional game to start at 1 p.m. Saturday, regular-season champion Moapa Valley, 4-0, 6-3, will host Pahrump Valley, 1-3, 3-6. The Pirates earned the No. 1 seed with a come-from-behind, 15-14 victory against arch-rival Mesquite Virgin Valley Thursday.

In the other first-round matchup, it will be Virgin Valley, the state runnerup (to Truckee, Calif.) in 2005, and Faith Lutheran colliding in Las Vegas at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"All the stuff that's happened in the past doesn't matter for this game," said Hug. "This is a new season. Everybody is 0-0, so anything is possible. The keys Saturday will be: don't make major mistakes and eliminate mental errors. I think we can compete if we don't make mistakes like throwing an interception, or giving up a long kickoff return, or a fumble."

In the first game against Moapa Valley, sophomore running back Brad Weiss and quarterback Max Jenkins led the Pirates' 389-yard offensive output. Weiss rushed for 202 yards and three touchdowns on just 20 carries, while Jenkins was 6-for-10 for 89 yards and two touchdowns, both caught by Dustin Maletich.

Pahrump Valley countered with senior tailback Rocky Spencer, who scored on runs of 73, 77 and 63 yards as he rushed for 255 yards on only 16 carries and also caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Travis Ott.

Spencer passed the 1,000-yard mark Thursday, as he gained 71 yards on 20 rushes. He now has 1,041 yards and nine touchdowns on 160 attempts this season.

Senior fullback Steve Kelley needed only nine carries to gain 167 yards and score twice against Boulder City Thursday. Ott, running the option to near perfection, gained 124 yards on just 11 carries, including a 38-yard touchdown run on a fake punt in the fourth quarter.

Said a smiling Ott: "I didn't decide to run until the snap." Ott took advantage of a heavy Eagle rush, which earlier had produced a blocked punt, but also had led to a roughing-the-kicker penalty just moments before his game-breaking run. His touchdown and Kelley's two-point conversion run boosted PV's lead to 34-14 with 4:52 left in the game.

Zack Weldon scored on a 12-yard pass from Ott, who was 7-for-14 for 126 yards and that TD. Weldon, who caught three passes for 78 yards, also gained 28 yards on two end-around plays.

The Trojans were in the red zone three other times, but two fumbles and an interception stifled those drives.

Boulder City's Michael Stewart rushed for 160 yards on 14 attempts; Brandon Murphy had 81 yards on just eight attempts, and Kurt Thien had 91 yards on 15 rushes. Three fumbles, including one at the PVHS 2 in the first quarter, nullified those strong individual efforts.

Quarterback David Brown threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Mike Misuraca and Murphy scored on a 15-yard run for the Eagles. Brown, however, was only 3-for-16 for 53 yards.

Moapa Valley earned the No. 1 seed and the regular-season title by coming back from a 14-7 deficit to score with 28 seconds left in the game, then adding a two-point conversion.

Faith Lutheran closed the regular season with a 38-18 victory against Legacy, a new Las Vegas high school team that finished 0-5 against Southern 3-A opponents.
