BEATTY MISSES PLAYOFFS Tonopah to play Eagles in 1-A volleyball tourney
By DON McDERMOTT Round Mountain spoiled Tonopah's bid for a No. 1 seed in the Southern Nevada Class A regional volleyball tournament, by sweeping the Lady Muckers in the final Central Division doubleheader of the season Thursday. The Knights claimed the Central title by beating Nye County and division rival Tonopah 25-14, 23-25, 15-12 in the first match, and 25-12, 25-22 in the second. Round Mountain finished 9-1 in the division, while Tonopah was 8-2. Earning the No. 3 seed from the Central Division was Lund, 7-3, and at No. 4 at 4-6 was Henderson Warren-Walker. Another Nye team, Beatty, won a twin bill from Indian Springs 25-22, 25-23 and 25-23, 19-25, 16-14, but the Hornets were 2-8 in the division and did not qualify for the playoffs, nor did the Thunderbirds, 3-7. Not winning the division and earning a No. 1 seed put Tonopah into a precarious position, since coach Judy Boni's team will face Lake Mead Christian Academy at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Southern regionals at Lund. Lake Mead was No. 3 in the South Division, but the Eagles split a doubleheader with defending state champion Pahranagat Valley Alamo and defeated Class 3-A Pahrump Valley this season. The Eagles finished third in the South, which was won by Las Vegas Mountain View Christian. Alamo, rebuilding this season without the incomparable Kalee Whipple (now at NCAA Division I Utah on a basketball scholarship), was second. The No. 4 seed was Las Vegas Calvary Chapel. The tournament will be played in its entirety Saturday on two courts at Lund High School. The semifinal winners automatically advance to the state tournament, to be played Nov. 10-11 at Galena High School in Reno. At Round Mountain, the host Knights were led by the veteran Katie Redman to victory. "Katie had a great game hitting," said Boni. "We just could not pick the ball up. "We've got a lot of work to do this week on passing," said Boni, in her second season as the Muckers' coach. "We had problems with even easy free balls." Kristi Glover had 15 kills, three blocks and nine points for Tonopah, which had Maci McLauchlin adding five kills, three blocks and 14 points. Liz Boni had 23 assists, a block, two kills and nine points, with Julie Dowers getting six kills and four points. Five seniors -- Charlie Underwood, Lorraine True, Amber White, Sheeva Morgan and Daniella Moreno -- played their final matches for Beatty. "Only Charlie and Lorraine were starters, with Amber coming in to serve," said coach Mike Duszynski. "We will have a lot of players return next season. We'll need to get stronger, with that strength helping their experience."
