Trojans, Eagles in volleyball encore
By DON McDERMOTT
In the 2006 Southern Nevada Class 3-A League volleyball campaign, there were two certainties -- defending league and playoff champion Las Vegas Faith Lutheran was not going to lose -- and the Crusaders didn't -- and Mesquite Virgin Valley's girls were going to have trouble winning -- and the Bulldogs did not. However, when Pahrump Valley, Overton Moapa Valley and Boulder City collided, anything could happen -- and did. Pahrump Valley defeated visiting Boulder City 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 25-16 Friday to sweep the Lady Eagles and square its 3-A record at 4-4. By virtue of that victory, earned the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, which will be contested Friday at Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite. Boulder City finished 4-4 as well, and guess what? Sure, the Eagles get to battle the Trojans again, in a first-round match at 5 p.m. At 3 p.m., it will be 13-time state champion Moapa Valley vs. Faith Lutheran. The championship match is at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association state championships Nov. 10-11 at Galena High School in Reno. Boulder City was 2-0 vs. Moapa Valley, 0-2 vs. Faith Lutheran and 2-0 vs. Virgin Valley. Moapa Valley swept both Pahrump Valley and Virgin Valley, but went 0-2 vs. Faith Lutheran and 0-2 vs. Boulder City. Pahrump Valley was 0-2 vs. Faith Lutheran and Moapa Valley, but was 2-0 against Boulder City and Virgin Valley. Pahrump Valley lost six of seven games in the two matches with Faith Lutheran, with the lone win coming on the Crusaders' court. The Trojans were 6-1 against Boulder City, 6-1 vs. Virgin Valley and 1-6 vs. Moapa Valley. Against the Eagles last Thursday, Brittney Lindgren had 20 digs; Angelica Villa had 13 digs, two kills, two blocks and 29 assists; Michelle Dannenberger had three aces, 11 digs, 18 kills and four blocks, and Kristi Daffer had 11 digs, 15 kills and four blocks. Ashley Humbert, Karen Visser, Frankie Beatty and Taylor Lau combined for 21 digs, four kills, a block and two assists. The PV girls dominated the first and third games, but they surrendered a 20-16 lead in the second game by committing seven unforced errors during a 9-0 run by the Eagles. In the fourth game, Pahrump Valley trailed 6-2, but went on a 23-10 run to beat Boulder City. The Eagles had basketball and soccer standout Katie Palmer in their lineup, along with Caiti Forrester, the sister of former Eagles standout Tori Forrester. "I must admit a certain amount of pride in how the girls played," said Richard Barker, the Pahrump Valley coach. "The girls demonstrated a new confidence that I had only hoped for. "It was nice to see them keep their composure as they struggled to secure enough points to place themselves in the lead again (in game four)," said Barker. "I think they now understand that mistakes are part of the game. "Our defense still needs work, but it is nice to see the numbers (on the statistics chart) spread across the board," said Barker. |
