Volunteers banquet

The annual United Way "Cheers for Volunteers" banquet, honoring volunteers from all walks of life, will be held Friday at the Saddle West Hotel and Casino.

Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with a presentation of the colors by the Pahrump Valley High School JROTC at 7 p.m. A buffet dinner will immediately follow and the awards ceremony will start at 8 p.m.

Tickets for this black tie affair are $30 each or $240 for a table of eight. Tickets are still available and may be purchased by calling the United Way at 751-2400 or 751-3734. Tickets are also available at the Saddle West front desk and the Chamber of Commerce.

Holiday bazaar

St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church will hold a holiday bazaar from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church, 631 W. Irene St.

The bazaar will feature unique handmade items, home-baked goodies and a white elephant table.

TOPS open house

TOPS Club Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) will host an informative, fun-filled open house at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Southern Baptist Church, 741 E. Fehrs Way (corner of Fehrs Way and Highway 160).

The event will showcase TOPS approach to weight loss through information, motivation and support. Men, women, teens and preteens committed to obtaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are invited to attend this no-cost event.

DMV office to move

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles will move its field services branch office in Pahrump.

No DMV services will be available in Pahrump today; this is to enable workers to move into the permanent new office at 1780 E. Basin Ave., Suite 1.

The new facility will open Thursday.

Parent/teacher conferences

Rosemary Clarke Middle School will hold parent/teacher conferences from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the school's gymnasium, 4201 N. Blagg Road. Appointments are not necessary.

Also, Pahrump Valley High School will have parent/teacher conferences from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the gymnasium, 501 E. Calvada Blvd. Report cards will be distributed during this time.

Genealogical society meeting

The Pahrump Nevada Genealogical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the multi-purpose room of the LDS church on Wilson and West.

The program will be "Let's research," by members of the society.

Toys for Tots, No to Abuse fundraiser

A fundraiser to benefit Toys for Tots and No to Abuse will be held Saturday at Horizon Academy in Amargosa Valley.

Sponsored by the Horizon Academy Student Council, the event will feature raffles, a car wash, a baked goods auction and a lot of Mexican food. Lunch is free for anyone who donates an unwrapped toy.

In addition to the fundraiser, Horizon Academy will conduct an open house to give the public a chance to tour the campus and talk to staff and students.

Both events will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the baked goods auction to take place at 1 p.m. Fundraising events will be held at the academy's south parking lot, located on the corner of Highway 373 and Mecca Road.

Architects to present designs for school

The Nye County School District board of trustees will interview architect candidates for the design of the new permanent modular constructed school, Ron & Charlotte Floyd Elementary, during their regularly scheduled board meeting at 11 a.m. (time estimated for this item) Friday at 484 S. West St.

The public is cordially invited to attend this meeting to hear presentations from these architects.

Rummage sale

Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold a giant fall/winter rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 1300 East Highway 372.

Books, movies, Christmas items, clothes, crafts and more will be available, as well as baked goods, candies, soup and a variety of sandwiches.

Laureate Omicron Chapter sale

The local Laureate Omicron Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi will hold its seventh annual November garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 3751 S. Nevada Ave.

Monies received from the sale will be used for a monetary scholarship that is awarded to a qualifying graduating female student from Pahrump Valley High School and also several other local philanthropic donations on an as-needed basis.

Friends of the Library

The Pahrump Friends of the Library will hold its monthly meeting Saturday in the Pahrump Community Library meeting room, 701 East St.

TOPS benefit

An outside benefit for TOPS and Jeanette Petras will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Stagestop Casino on Blagg Road.

Live music will start at noon, featuring Stone Blind and Crosswinds. Donations toward the yard sale and raffle are very needed.

Parenting class

A parenting class for parents and their children ages 11 to 18 will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 and Nov. 18 at No To Abuse, 621 S. Blagg Road.

Completion of the course requires attending all 12 hours. The facilitator will be Chris Brockman.

Veterans information

Nye County Veteran Services will hold a free information session at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Job Connect on Calvada Boulevard.

All veterans are welcome to attend. General information will be presented on all veterans affairs benefits that veterans may be eligible for.

DAR monthly meeting

The Pahrump Springs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold its monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Nov. 8 at the Bob Ruud Community Center, Room A.

PAC Theater Guild auditions

The Pahrump Arts Council Theater Guild will hold auditions for "Nunsense" at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at WestCare Nevada, 2280 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 101.

Needed are actresses, singers and dancers who can sell a song and learn how to tap dance. Prepare a short comic song and be prepared to read and dance. Performance dates will be Feb. 9 through Feb. 17, 2007.

Christmas bazaar

The Amargosa Valley Artist Guild is sponsoring a Christmas bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 11 at the community center, 811 E. Amargosa Farm Road.

Burn ban to be lifted

Effective Friday, the moratorium on burning will be lifted, according to the Pahrump Fire-Rescue Service.

People who possess burn permits must still call to determine if conditions warrant burning. Those without permits must obtain a permit (at no cost) from the main fire station at 300 N. Highway 160.

Fiber Arts entries

Pull out the needles and get the sewing machines working, ladies and gentlemen. Participants are being sought to take part in the Annual Fiber Arts Show, to be held Feb. 16-18, 2007.

Entries range from quilts, wearable art, needle point, knitting, crocheting, etc.

The show is coordinated by the Shadow Mountain Quilters and sponsored by the Pahrump Arts Council and grant money from the town of Pahrump.

Sheriff's Office takes part in safety fair

The Sheriff's Office participated in Wal-Mart's safety fair from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 28.

The Sheriff's Office fingerprinted and photographed 60 children; performed 14 car seat inspections and replaced one unsafe seat; and gave away four other seats to children in need.

Daughters of Mary fish dinner

The Daughters of Mary will hold a fish dinner from 4-7 p.m. Friday in the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church hall at 781 E. Gamebird Road.

Fried or baked fish, as well as homemade desserts will be available. The dinner is dine in or take out.
