By DON McDERMOTTCOACHES TO BE NAMED Workouts continue for Pahrump Valley high school athletesPVT
Very soon ... perhaps by Wednesday ... Pahrump Valley High School fans will know who the coaches will be for the Trojans' fall sports teams. The chain of events: 1. Brian Hug will be the football coach, and he's put together a staff that will report for duty Aug. 10, when the Trojans begin preseason drills. 2. As athletics director, Hug has already programmed some moves to improve the football stadium, especially the turf, the seating and lighting. 3. Again, AD Hug said a volleyball coach has been selected; that appointment will be announced next week, when he also expects to have a cross country coach chosen. 4. There is one major vacancy, however. C.J. Johnson, who is not a teacher, but who directed the PVHS boys soccer team to the Nevada Class 3-A championship game in 2005, won't return this fall because of business commitments. Who will replace him is to be announced as well. 5. Actually, No. 5 is a conglomerate of moves Hug wants to make, to continue the slate of improvements begun by his predecessor, Rich Lauver. More on all of this agenda later. Hug, who is at home in Michigan, is scheduled to be in town for a couple days next week, before he flies to Pennsylvania to coach the West team in the Great Lakes Indoor Football League All-Star game, to be played Aug. 5 at Lehigh Valley. Hug was the head coach of the Port Huron, Mich., Pirates, who went 12-0 and won the Great Lakes playoff title. At the moment, athletes in various sports are participating in weight lifting and other conditioning programs. As many as 70 athletes attend one or both weightlifting sessions conducted each day under the direction of Craig Rieger. That schedule will be followed through Aug. 7; three days later, preseason workouts start for the football team and on Aug. 14, other fall sports teams - in soccer, cross country, girls golf and volleyball - will report. NOTES -- McKenzie Dean, who as a freshman won the Nevada Class 3-A title in the 3200-meter run, earned the 'will-to-win' award in a long-distance running camp at the University of Oregon in Eugene ... Dean is remaining in Oregon to continue her summer training regimen ... Janelle Ballantine, a 2006 PVHS grad, played volleyball in Australia and was named to an all-star team that defeated tournament champion Missouri in the finals ... Ballantine, who played volleyball, basketball and fast-pitch softball at PVHS, will attend UNLV in the fall. |
