Fires continue to burn
Two wildfires continued to burn along the southwestern flank of the Spring Mountains, according to the Bureau of Land Management and National Interagency Fire Center. The Appaloosa fire in Trout Canyon measured about 600 acres, said BLM spokeswoman Hillerie Patton yesterday morning. It was about 10 percent contained. Resources committed to fighting the blaze, she said, included two fire engines, the Gila hotshot crew from New Mexico, a helicopter and a heavy air tanker. "Short-range spotting, running and torching were observed," the NIFC reported in the July 27 edition of its National Fire News. Meanwhile, the Picnic fire up Lovell Canyon covered about 1,000 acres, according to NIFC, and, said Patton, was 50 percent contained. The Lovell Canyon and Lovell Summit roads were still closed to traffic Thursday morning. The Picnic was begun by lightning early in the week and quickly spread, threatening the Torino Ranch for a time. During Tuesday afternoon its smoke was visible from various points in Pahrump. For two days the valley has been hazed over with smoke from a variety of fires in the area.
