Nye County has 3,580 more registered voters for the Aug. 15 primary election than it did at this time four years ago, but Republicans still hold about a 6 percentage point edge over Democrats.

Voter registration closed at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Nye County has 20,719 registered voters, which includes 9,075 Republicans, 43.8 percent of the total, 7,722 Democrats, 37.7 percent, and 2,876 who call themselves non-partisan, 13.8 percent, according to figures released by the Nye County Clerk's Office.

The remaining 5 percent of county voters, or 812 persons, are registered with the Independent American Party; 186 with the Libertarian Party; 19 with the Green Party; and 16 with the Natural Law Party.

The current voter registration totals are up 20.8 percent from 17,139 at the end of July 2002, the last time these same positions were up for election. In July 2002, there were 7,566 registered Republicans, 44.1 percent of the total, 6,710 Democrats, 39.1 percent and 2,302 non-partisan, 13.4 percent.

Republicans hold the edge in registered voters in all but six precincts. Democrats outnumber Republicans substantially only in Precinct 21, the westernmost part of the Pahrump Valley in Commissioner Gary Hollis' district.
