The Port Huron, Mich., Pirates, coached by Brian Hug, won the Great Lakes Indoor Football League playoff championship Saturday, beating the visiting Rochester, N.Y., Raiders 40-34 at the McMorran Place.

Hug is the athletics director and football coach at Pahrump Valley High School.

The Pirates went 10-0 in the regular season, then won two playoff games to finish undefeated, a rarity in professional football at any level. The Pirates became the fourth team in indoor football history to finish undefeated. A season-record crowd of 2,575 watched the game, dubbed Great Lakes Bowl I.

In 2003, the Ohio Valley Greyhounds went 17-0 to win the National Indoor Football League championship. And on that team were four current Pirates - linebacker Ed Byrnes, quarterback Shane Franzer, lineman Shawn Hackett and running back Rayshawn Askew.

Port Huron was outgained 325 to 248 by the Raiders, who held a 185-125 edge rushing, which was they were able to lead 21-14 early in the second quarter. The Pirates were able to put more pressure on Raider quarterback Matt Cottengim in the remainder of the game, led by Most Valuable Player Byrnes, who recorded a sack and had 12 pressures on Cottengim.

Shane Franzer, the Port Huron quarterback, was 7-for-12 for 123 yards and a touchdown. Port Huron's running game was paced by tailback Reyshawn Askew, who scored the game-clinching touchdown in the final quarter. Franzer had recovered an Askew fumble to keep the drive alive.

"I'm proud to be a part of this team," said Hug, whose staff will be back in action at the GLIFL All-Star game in Bethlehem, Pa., Aug. 5. "We had the breaks all season, and when we made bad plays, we recovered ... and we capitalized on other teams' mistakes."
