By MARK WAITERobbery-murder participant faces prison timePVT
Randall Stafford, 33, a man who participated in the robbery and murder of Terry "The Greek" Petropoulos, who formerly tended bar in Pahrump, was sentenced to 10 to 25 years in prison in Las Vegas last Thursday. Stafford was sentenced by District Judge Michelle Leavitt after telling family members of the victim he regretted his involvement in Petropoulos' slaying, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Petropoulos had managed the Town Hall Bar on Mesquite Avenue in Pahrump for almost four years but left in early 2004 to help his daughter tend bar on the night shift at the Odyssey Lounge on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, a long time friend, Gus Mitropanopoulos told the Pahrump Valley Times after the incident. Mitropanopoulos and Petropoulos came from the same town in Greece and had been friends for 33 years since they met at the Grecian Go-Go in Las Vegas in 1971. Petropoulos emigrated to the U.S. in 1956 and opened a series of bars in Las Vegas. Authorities said Stafford and Kevin Martinette, 28, robbed, beat and strangled Petropoulos at the Odyssey Lounge March 8, 2004. His death came two days after Petropoulos celebrated his 70th birthday. Martinette, a heroin addict, left his fingerprint in a restroom at the crime scene. Witnesses said they saw Martinette and Stafford in possession of pool cues and bottles of liquor from the bar after the crime and that the two were trying to sell the items at a downtown motel shortly before their arrests. Martinette pleaded guilty in August 2005 to a charge of first-degree murder involving a victim older than 65 in an agreement that allowed him to avoid a possible death sentence, the newspaper reported. He was sentenced to life in prison with the chance of parole. In a plea deal finalized earlier this year, Stafford pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in a negotiation that called for a 10- to 25-year sentence. A jailhouse snitch told police Stafford admitted to participating in the robbery, but the informant had multiple criminal convictions, creating a credibility problem, Clark County prosecutor Vicki Monroe said. In addition, Monroe said, after Martinette pleaded guilty, he told prosecutors, "I'm going to testify that Stafford had nothing to do with it. It was all me."
