A close play at first base was one of the few exciting moments in the District 4 Southern Nevada Senior Little League Division playoffs Sunday at Honeysuckle Park. Red Rock ran away to a 12-1, five-inning mercy-rule victory against Summerlin to sweep the best-of-three series, 2-0.

Red Rock of Las Vegas rolled to a 12-1 victory against Summerlin to earn a 2-0 sweep of a best-of-three series that determined the Southern Nevada District 4 Senior Little League baseball championship Sunday.

In a game played in 100-degree temperatures at midday Sunday, Red Rock scored six runs in the second inning and added five in the third to dominate Summerlin, which was held scoreless until it pushed across a meaningless run in the fifth inning.

Red Rock got superb pitching from starter Jordan Johnson and reliever Phil Navarro to shut down the Summerlin hitters. Johnson worked three innings, striking out three and allowing one hit. Navarro gave up a single to John Latteri and a run-scoring double to Ryan Sigman in the fifth, as he struck out two and walked one in two innings.

In the six-run second inning outburst, Red Rock used two walks and two errors and a sacrifice fly by Navarro to boost its lead to 5-0. Steven Smith singled and Martin Cerrone and Andrew Perreault had consecutive triples to boost that advantage to 7-0.

Smith, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound catcher who was 3-for-3 Sunday, had a two-run single in the third inning and Chris Antoku had a run-producing double in the five-run third. Red Rock, which will play in the state tournament at Reno Friday, and Summerlin were the only Senior Division teams to qualify for the District 4 playoffs.
