By DON McDERMOTTPahrump Juniors eliminated from District PlayoffsPVT
In the first game of the Southern Nevada District 4 Junior Division Little League baseball playoffs, Pahrump outhit Mountain Ridge 3-1 -- but lost 2-1 when the Las Vegans scored two runs on a wild throw in the third inning Friday night. In an elimination game Saturday, Pahrump slugged 14 hits and scored 12 runs, but lost 13-12 to Peccole, which overcame 7-0 and 11-5 deficits to advance in the baseball tournament being played at Honeysuckle Park. Peccole used 17 hits, four walks and two hit batters and got the win when it scored two runs in the fifth inning to break an 11-11 tie. In the loss to Peccole, leadoff batter Tyler Lepley went 4-for-5, while Jaret Holley, Eli Cline and Nick Murphy added two hits each for Pahrump's 13- and 14-year-old all-stars. Stepping up big for Peccole was righthanded relief pitcher Ted Merrich, who was tagged for four runs in the second inning, but then held Pahrump to one run and four hits over the final five innings. Garrett Darr, a big righthanded pitcher, yielded only an infield hit to Mountain Ridge, but the Las Vegas team used a passed ball on a third strike and a wild throw to send two runners scurrying home in the third inning. Darr struck out four, walked one and hit a batter in six innings. Pahrump jumped ahead 1-0 in the second inning when Ryan Pike was hit by a pitch, moved up on an infield out and scored on Darr's long single. Lepley was 1-for-2 with a walk against Mountain Ridge, giving him five hits in seven trips in two games. Lepley walked, stole second and was on third base when another rally was short-circuited. Mountain Ridge righthander Lowell Munson was the winner, allowing only two runners to advance as far as third base in a complete-game effort. The tournament will end today, with Red Rock, undefeated in three starts, playing either Mountain Ridge or Lone Mountain at 6 p.m. at Honeysuckle Park. On Monday, Red Rock edged Mountain Ridge 8-7 in the winners' bracket finals, while Lone Mountain stopped Spring Valley 16-2 in an elimination game. Mountain Ridge and Lone Mountain played Tuesday night. NOTES -- On the Pahrump team, coached by John Walker and Ed Martinez, were Garrett Darr, Robert Torres, Tyler Lepley, Jaret Holley, Eli Cline, Nick Murphy, Doug Trone, Doug West, Ryan Pike, Eduardo Martinez and Paul Anderson ... West had a bases-loaded double in the first inning against Peccole ... The Pahrump team played rather well defensively in most situations, committing only four errors and executing three double plays in the two games ... One error, however, allowed the winning runs in the loss to Mountain Ridge ...
