By DON McDERMOTTJunior golf tournament season ends with Goins MemorialPVT
The seventh annual Gene Goins Memorial will end the summer season for boys and girls competing in the Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association. The tournament will be played Aug. 7-8 at the Lakeview Executive course, a par 59, 3,600-yard layout located between Pahrump Valley Boulevard and Dandelion Road on Mount Charleston Drive. More than 110 youngsters, ages 7 to 17, are eligible to compete in the tournament, because they participated in the golf clinic in June. Completing the three-day clinic is required of all boys and girls who want to play in PVJGA events. Past age-group winners Desiree Fortin, Ashley Keller, Zoe Bertz, Shane Lindemann, Ryan Hammar and Jeff Holley are expected to play. PVHS girls team members Ashley Bartholomew, Courtney Salmon, and Jasper Biggs are eligible, as are Travis Murray, Travis Ott, and Cameron Belcher of the boys squad. The medal-play tournament for the 12-14 and 15-17 age groups will include two 18-hole rounds. For players 7-8 and 9-11, there will be two nine-hole rounds. Trophies will be presented to the top three finishers in each age group, in both girls and boys divisions. Gene Goins was one of the primary supporters of the junior golf program, when it was started in the early 1980s. His son, Larry, is one of the tournament directors, who works with his wife Elaine in organizing the event. The Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Founders Association includes directing the PVJGA, as well as the high school and Rosemary Clarke Middle School programs. A weekly tournament scheduled Monday was canceled because of inclement weather. Another event is slated Monday at the Executive course, starting at 3 p.m. |
