A year ago, the Pahrump Valley High School girls golf team shot 466 as it won its first Southern Nevada Class 3-A League match. Coach Julie Floyd's team went on to win the league, regional and state championships.

Last Thursday, at the rugged Falcon Ridge course in Mesquite, the Lady Trojans shot 467 to edge Las Vegas Faith Lutheran by one stroke in the 2006 season opener.

The major difference? A year ago, Rachel Lindemann, a senior, was in the PVHS lineup, but she is now attending classes and playing golf at the University of North Dakota. It was Lindemann's 83 on the second day of the Nevada state 3-A tournament last October that helped power the Trojans to its second title in four years and third in eight seasons.

The major assets? Two-time Southern player of the year Desiree Fortin -- now a senior -- is back and it was her 75 on the par 70 Falcon Ridge course that provided the impetus to victory. Her main rival -- Faith Lutheran's Candra Sumedhatip -- shot 79 as the Crusaders finished with 468.

Ashley Keller, a sophomore in her second season as a starter, had 90 for the Trojans, who had Courtney Salmon shoot 98, Ashlee Bartholomew 101, Jasper Biggs 103, and newcomer Nicole Balding 121.

For Faith Lutheran -- which hosts a league match Thursday at noon -- Kaitlin Main had 85, Brooke Prendes 97, Reba Schneiderman 108, Shawn Haggerty 105 and Brittani Bellantyne 102. So in five heads-up matches, the Trojans won three.

Mesquite Virgin Valley, which was third in the state tournament (behind the Trojans and Class A Wells) last fall, had 482. Brittany Thurston had 85, Nakelle Faught 92, Samantha Bulloch 95, Amanda Bulloch 101, Felisha Baeza 108 and Hannah Bulloch 125.

Boulder City played for the first time in five years without Cathleen Ward, twice a player of the year award challenger. The Lady Eagles had 562, with a 99 by Heidi Harteis their low individual. Margot Potter had 110, Ashley Vince 115, Ana McCullom 103 and Jessica Jones 135.

Moapa Valley did not have any players at the first match.

NOTES -- Pahrump Valley earned 10 team points for its victory ... Faith Lutheran had nine, Virgin Valley eight, and Boulder City seven ... In the player of the year standings, Desiree Fortin of Pahrump Valley received 12 points ... Candra Sumedhatip of Faith Lutheran got 11.

... Kaitline Main of the Lady Crusaders 9.5 ... Brittany Thurston of Virgin Valley has 9.5 ... At 8 is Ashley Keller of PVHS ... Completing the top 10 are Nakelle Faught, Virgin Valley, 7; Samantha Bulloch, Virgin Valley, 6; Brooke Prendes, Faith Lutheran, 5; Courtney Salmon, PVHS, 4, and Heidi Harteis, Boulder City, 3 ... Pahrump Valley will entertain its 3-A league rivals at Mountain Falls Sept. 21, as well as host the Southern regionals Oct. 12.
