The Pahrump Valley Times Nevada High School football ratings will start in the Sept. 8 edition.

In 2005, the top-ranked teams were Reno McQueen, Class 4-A; Spring Creek, 3-A; Pershing County Lovelock, 2-A and Pahranagat Valley Alamo, 1-A. Only Alamo was able to claim a Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association-sanctioned championship. No. 2 Las Vegas prevailed in 4-A, beating No. 4 Hug, and No. 4 Lincoln County triumphed in 2-A, stopping No. 2 Battle Mountain in the title game.

Truckee, Calif., won the 3-A state championship, with a 37-14 conquest of the Southern League's Mesquite Virgin Valley, which had been ranked No. 4 in the final ratings. The Bulldogs started their drive to the finals with a 26-7 play-in victory against Pahrump Valley, the Southern regular-season champion.

Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, another Southern 3-A member, was No. 3 in the last ratings, but the Crusaders were stopped 34-31 by Virgin Valley in the state semifinals.

Tonopah was ranked No. 2 in the final 1-A ratings, but the Muckers were upset 62-40 by Laughlin in the first round of the playoffs.

Both Las Vegas Chaparral and Legacy -- Pahrump Valley opponents this season -- were mentioned in the Las Vegas Review-Journal's annual high school preseason pages Thursday. (www.lvrj.com).

Trojans coach Brian Hug indicated that more than 110 players are now working out this preseason.

No Las Vegas high school football team was listed in the USA Today Super 25 rankings Thursday.

Getting the No. 1 nod was Hoover, Ala., with Duncan, S.C., Byrnes at No. 2. Byrnes, 15-0 in 2005, will play Belle Glade, Fla., Glades Central on ESPN at noon ET Saturday in quest of its 27th consecutive victory.

In the USA Today West regional rankings, Concord, Calif., De La Salle was No. 1, with Westlake Village, Calif., Oaks Christian second and Chandler, Ariz., Hamilton third.

The newspaper also ranked the top 50 prospects and again, Nevada players didn't get a shot. Ranked No. 1 was Jimmy Clausen, a 6-3, 208-pound quarterback from Westlake Village, Calif., Oaks Christian. He has already signed with Notre Dame.

No. 2, Marvin Austin, a 6-3, 300 defensive tackle from Washington, D.C., Ballou, has not yet announced his intentions.
