Pahrump Valley's Gold Cup Shootout -- to be contested Friday and Saturday at Honeysuckle Park -- doesn't have all of the pizzazz previous tournaments have had, but the Trojans will still get in plenty of live action as they continue preparations for the 2006 Southern Nevada Class 3-A League campaign.

The boys have a new coach -- Gene Smith -- but old objectives: win the league regular-season and regional titles and advance to the Nevada state tournament. In 2005, coach C.J. Johnson's team didn't win the league championship, but the veteran Trojans claimed the regional championship, then advanced to the state title game at Reno before losing 2-0 to Truckee, Calif., at Mackay Stadium.

The girls, again coached by Steve Coleman, are coming off a sensational season. The 2005 squad won a school-record 14 games and ended a long losing streak against Boulder City, but the PV girls ran into trouble against the Eagles in the regional semifinals at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex in Las Vegas.

The field doesn't include big-time soccer powers like Las Vegas Centennial or other Class 4-A teams that have competed in the tournament in previous years, but with league rivals Faith Lutheran and Moapa Valley coming here, the Trojans will have to face plenty of challenges to be successful.

New Hope Christian, a Pahrump-based school, is entered in the boys' tournament, and completing the girls' pool will be the Trojan junior varsity team.

The tournament starts at noon Friday, with the Pahrump Valley boys taking on Faith Lutheran and the PVHS JV girls facing Moapa Valley.

The championship games will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday to end a series of bracket contests.
