By PHILLIP GOMEZKulkin says Murray a tool to machinePVT
Harley Kulkin, the losing candidate in the Democratic primary race for Assembly District 36 last week, minced no words in the wake of his loss and subsequent disruption of the Nye County Democrats' headquarters in Pahrump. Kulkin lost the contest for the Nevada statehouse to Laurayne Murray, who will now face Republican Ed Goedhart in the general election. "Laurayne Murray is like Genie Dyer," accused Kulkin. He referred to Nye County's scandalous deputy public administrator, who, with her husband "Red" Dyer, filled the pages of The Pahrump Valley Times in 2000-2001. Red Dyer went to prison for embezzlement, and Genie Dyer, convicted of the same crime while in office, went on the lam and remains a fugitive from justice, possibly hiding somewhere in Mexico. Kulkin accused Murray of taking Clark County campaign contributions through the Democratic party's political machine, and said she therefore owes political favors to powerful people outside Nye County. "She's a Judas in our community," Kulkin said. "She's willing to manipulate anyone to get what she wants out of life." Murray, in Kulkin's view, was the anointed one on the state Democratic bandwagon, an appointment that enabled her to obtain "Las Vegas money," he said. "The real issue is (state Democratic Chairman) Tom Collins and Barbara Buckley," said Kulkin. "There's a real story here." The two Clark County Democrats in the Nevada Assembly, he charged, funneled campaign money to Murray. "Forget the law," said Kulkin, who declared that campaign finance laws only support a corrupt system. "They think they have a right to come in here and tell us who we have to put in office," Kulkin said of Collins and other Democratic operatives in the state party apparatus. "Laurayne Murray has a network going from the top of the Democratic Party on down that arranges for her to meet people, make appearances and get campaign funds," he said. No one else running got that kind of treatment, he added. "I got an antiquated list of Democratic contacts in the other counties. I can't even get to first base 'cause I don't know who to contact," he said. "The kicker is," he said, "I should kiss up to Tom Collins, and the next time they might consider backing me for office." "I've always preached it's about the candidate, not the party," said Kulkin. "Laurayne Murray didn't get any money out of Pahrump," said Kulkin. "I got more money than her." As to the charge of being a sore loser, Kulkin said, "I ran for county commissioner twice and lost and went back to my business. But when the party spent the whole time promoting their preferred candidate ... it makes me ashamed of being a Democrat. But I've been driving Harleys and Fords all my life and can't stop being one." Kulkin added, "I will not support local Democrats whatsoever. We need to keep Clark County corruption out of Nye County." |
