SPECIAL TO THE PVT
Gorman plays in World Series
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Las Vegas Post 76, represented by baseball players from Bishop Gorman High School, will play Midlothian, Va., in a first-round game in the American Legion World Series at Veterans Memorial Stadium here today. The game will start around 11 a.m. PST. The Titans, managed by Chris Sheff, are 55-11 in Legion games, including a 10-0 run in the Nevada and Western regional playoffs. They will battle Midlothian, 32-2, following the Sumter, S.C.-Lincoln, Neb. contest which begins at 7:30 a.m. PST. Sumter is 32-6, while Lincoln is 43-12. In other games today, Metairie, La., 40-6, will play Terre Haute, Ind., 35-5, at 2:30 p.m., and Lawrence, Kan., 41-7, takes on Milton, Mass., 33-2 at 5:30 p.m. Metairie, according to reports in the Cedar Rapids Gazette, will be considered the favorite. The Lousiana team eliminated 2005 Legion World Series champion Enid, Okla., in the Mid-South finals last week. Metairie is 73-11 in all games, including a 33-5 record in spring high school competition. Gorman won the Nevada Class 4-A state championship last May in Reno and finished the season at 35-7-1, giving the prep Gaels and Legion Titans an overall record of 92-18-1 in 2006. Gorman was 3-0 in the state tournament, edging Galena 5-3 and pre-tournament favorite Las Vegas Silverado 9-8 to get to the finals. The Titans were 21-7 and were third in the Gold Division this summer, behind Sierra Vista and Silverado. In the Legion state tournament, Gorman lost 13-2 to Reno in the first round, meaning the Titans had to fight their way through the losers' bracket. And they did, beating Silverado 9-8, Reno 9-5, Durango 19-13 and 9-3, and Sierra Vista 8-5 in the championship game to earn a trip to the regionals, played at Albuquerque, N.M. Bishop Gorman's junior Legion team, comprised mostly of freshmen, went undefeated in 21 games to win that division championship. The Titans did not have a team in the Silver Division, which included Pahrump Valley (11-13). |
