SafePlace seeking donated office space SafePlace, an organization that is here in Pahrump to provide immediate help and support to youth in crisis, is trying to obtain donated office space that would adequately accommodate youth drop-ins and storage for supplies and donations. The organization is new to Pahrump and would provide services such as crisis intervention, shelter, job placement, food vouchers, hygiene products, toiletries, transportation and much more. New art gallery at senior center The Pahrump Arts Council has installed an art gallery space at the Pahrump Senior Center. A reception to celebrate the opening of this new gallery showcasing one or two person shows will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the senior center. VFW August calendar The August calendar of events for the VFW Post 10054 on Homestead Road is as follows: domestic beer $1.25, bottle beer $1.50, draft $1.25 every Thursday; breakfast served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Sunday, $4 donation; and full menu lunches served by Dennis from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Dinners: Friday -- Legion Auxiliary pork roast, 5-7 p.m. Aug. 25 -- No dinner, national convention. Aug. 27 -- National convention. All dinners are $6 and served from 4-7 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Hafen Elementary registration Hafen Elementary school is now registering new students for the 2006-2007 school year, Monday through Friday. After Aug. 25, registration will be from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The following is needed to register: birth certificate, Nevada required immunizations, proof of residence (utility bill or mortgage/rent receipt), and parent/guardian photo ID. Airstream Club rally The Sierra Nevada Unit of Wally Byam Caravan Club's International Airstream Club will rally at Lassen National Park Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Hot Creek camping area No. 2, northwest of Susanville (the gathering area). There will be boiling springs, "morning glory" pools, bubbling mud pots, boats to rent, fish to catch and six self-guided nature trails. United Way Hawaiian luau Bring your family and your chairs to The United Way of Pioneer Territory-sponsored Hawaiian luau from 6-10 p.m. Saturday at Honeysuckle Park. Traditional Hawaiian fare will served. Meals will be $10 per adult plate, $6 for children 12 and under and $2 hotdogs will be available for the children. United Way is also soliciting business sponsors to help defray the cost of food and entertainment. One hundred percent of the profits go to local United Way's special grants fund. Donna's Studio of Dance registration Donna's Studio of Dance will continue to hold registration for the 2006-2007 dance season through Sept. 4. Call 727-4211 for more information. Mt. Charleston registration Mt. Charleston Elementary School is registering new students for the 2006-07 school year from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. The office will be closed Thursday and Friday; registration will then continue Monday. Please bring proof of residency (power bill, renter's receipt, builder's permit, etc.), original birth certificate, original immunization record (hepatitis A and B are state requirements), and Social Security card for copying. Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2006. Mt. Charleston Elementary will hold a special orientation for "new" parents from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday in the multi-purpose room at the school. Class lists with teacher name and room number will be posted outside the school office after 5 p.m. Aug. 25. School resumes Aug. 28 (grades 1-5) and Aug. 30 for kindergarten. Progressive Choices Progressive Choices, a non-profit training center for helping the developmentally disabled, is seeking costume and float decoration donations to make its first float a success. Home school filing It is required that all parents wishing to home school their children must file an intent to home school with the Nye County School District office for each year that the child is home schooled. Red Hat book discussion The Pahrump Valley Red Hatters invite all Red Hat chapter members to a book discussion at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Pahrump Community Library. The book to be discussed is "Standing in the Rainbow," by Fanny Flagg. There will be a $1 fee for refreshments. Cinderella Girl pageant The Beatty/Amargosa Valley Cinderella Girls will hold their preliminary pageant Thursday at the Beatty Community Center. Help for veterans There is an office in Pahrump and in Tonopah where veterans can receive help in using their earned military benefits. The Pahrump office is in the Nevada Job Connect facility in the Calvada Eye building and the Tonopah office is in the Nye Regional Medical Center on Main Street.
