J.C. WATTS

Things that make you go 'hmmm' ...
My daddy was the master of common sense. Buddy Watts' formal education ceased after two days of seventh grade. Yet this man lived his life displaying - year in and year out - more common sense and reason than anyone I have met with their multiple degrees from OU, UT, MIT, USMA or the University of EIEIO.

'Fair Tax' isn't
Reader responses varied by length and tone, but said the same thing. It was that my column suggesting a fair and progressive national sales tax to replace the cheater-friendly income tax amounted to a rousing endorsement of a bill before Congress favored by conservatives and libertarians and called the Fair Tax.

Perfect 'Web site' for pest control not on the Internet
As if our house wasn't crowded enough, now we've got another who has taken up residence. In her defense, she is only about 4 inches from the tip of her forelegs to the tip of her back legs. And, she doesn't actually reside in the house, but rather just to the right of our front door.

Hot, cold climates make the man
I had meant to take up the Middle East today, but my analytical powers have wilted in the heat, and it is all I can do to get the recycling out to the curb and take the car in for an oil change. And now I'm all caught up in the question of what color sheets to buy. Flowered pattern vs. white. Thread count, etc. Usually my wife handles this, and I devote myself to larger matters, the coming crisis in health care, that sort of thing, but the heat wave throws everything off.
