The grand opening of the new Boys and Girls Club in Pahrump will be Monday at 2210 S. Mt. Charleston Blvd. (near the corner of Mt. Charleston and Rodeo). The ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 10 a.m., followed by club tours and a barbecue. Marine Corps League of Pahrump Active, reserve, retired and former marines are eligible for membership in the Greater Marine Corps League of Pahrump, Detachment No. 1199. Also, FMF Navy Corpsmen are eligible to join as well. Meetings are held at 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month at the VFW Post on Homestead Road. Help for veterans There is an office in Pahrump and in Tonopah where veterans can take advantage of earned military benefits. The Pahrump office is in the Nevada Job Connect facility in the Calvada Eye building and the Tonopah office is in the Nye Regional Medical Center on Main Street. Ken Shockley and his staff are there full-time to assist veterans in obtaining the benefits they earned. Call 537-2323 for more information. Hospice cell phone collection Nathan Adelson Hospice has sent its first shipment of cell phones collected from its Collective Good program. The hospice is asking the community for used cell phones for recycling to continue the ongoing program. Drop off places for cell phones have been identified and collection boxes have been put in place. New businesses want to help and four new ones have become community partners: The Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce, Desert Tanning Salon, Charleston Peak RV Park at the Winery and Wells Fargo Bank. They join established partners, Martinizing Dry Cleaners, Nevada Federal Credit Union, Valley Electric, The Wine Cellar and Nathan Adelson Hospice. Used cell phones may be dropped off at any one of these locations. SafePlace seeking donated office space SafePlace, an organization that is here to provide immediate help and support to youth in crisis, is trying to obtain donated office space that would adequately accommodate youth drop-ins and storage for supplies and donations. The organization is new to Pahrump and would provide services such as crisis intervention, shelter, job placement, food vouchers, hygiene products, toiletries, transportation and more. New art gallery at senior center The Pahrump Arts Council will install an art gallery space at the Pahrump Senior Center today. A reception to celebrate the opening of this new gallery showcasing one or two person shows will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 18 at the senior center. Elks Lodge No. 2796 In memory of PER John Jordan, who passed away July 23, 2006, The Pahrump Elks Lodge No. 2796 will donate all profits from the August Friday night dinners to the Jordan family. Computer swap meet Amateur Radio will hold an electronic computer swap meet from 6-11 a.m. the second Saturday of each month at 1161 S. Loop Road, starting in September. VFW August calendar The August calendar of events for the VFW Post 10054 on Homestead Road is as follows: domestic beer $1.25, bottle beer $1.50, draft $1.25 every Thursday; breakfast served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Sunday, $4 donation; and full menu lunches served by Dennis from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Dinners: Today -- Bernie's fish fry, 5-7 p.m. Aug. 18 -- Legion Auxiliary pork roast, 5-7 p.m. Aug. 25 -- No dinner, national convention. Aug. 27 -- National convention. All dinners are $6 and served from 4-7 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Mt. Charleston school registration Mt. Charleston Elementary School will register new students for the 2006-07 school year from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., starting Monday. The office will be closed Thursday and Aug. 18; registration will then continue Aug. 21. Please bring proof of residency (power bill, renter's receipt, builder's permit, etc.), original birth certificate, original immunization record (hepatitis A and B are state requirements), and Social Security card for copying. Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2006. Mt. Charleston Elementary will hold a special orientation for "new" parents from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Aug. 22 in the multi-purpose room at the school. Class lists with teacher name and room number will be posted outside the school office after 5 p.m. Aug. 25. School resumes Aug. 28 (grades 1-5) and Aug. 30 for kindergarten. Sunset Tavern school supply drive Saturday The Pahrump Sunset Tavern will hold a school supply drive from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the tavern on Second Street and Center (kitty-corner room the Moose Lodge). There will be live entertainment, fire truck rides, a karaoke contest and free food. The community is asked to bring supplies for the children. Call the tavern at 727-1508 for more information. One man art show at library The work of Duane Webb will be installed at 10 a.m. today and a reception for this well-known artist will be held from 1-3 p.m. Aug. 18 at the library, 701 East St. Oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings will be on display. Televised political forum today Channel 30 is giving all candidates running for office in Nye County an opportunity to come to the station and give a three-minute public speech on Harley's Show from 6 to 8 p.m. today at 250 W. Nopah Vista. To get to the studio, go seven miles north on Highway 160; left on Country Place; drive one block and a right on Nopah; follow curve and find 250 on the right. Call 751-1600 for more information. Cancer benefit at Sheri's Ranch Join the Vets for Brother Robo for a cancer benefit from 3-10 p.m. Aug. 26 at Sheri's Ranch. There will be food, soft drinks, alcohol for purchase, music and a raffle. The admission price will be $25 per person or $40 for a couple (a free raffle ticket will be included with purchase of admission). Tickets are available at Sheri's Ranch and the Wild Rose Florist in Pahrump. If unable to attend the event, donations may be sent to VNV/LV MC, P.O. Box 805, Pahrump, NV 89041-0805. All proceeds will go to Brother Robo. Hafen Elementary registration Hafen Elementary school new student registration for 2006-07 will begin from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, Monday through Friday. After Aug. 25, registration will be from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The following is needed to register: birth certificate, Nevada required immunizations, proof of residence (utility bill or mortgage/rent receipt), and parent/guardian photo ID.
