By DON McDERMOTTTHREE-DAY FOOTBALL CAMP Trojan workouts to start Thursday; opener is Sept. 1PVT
The Pahrump Valley High School football team will participate in a three-day, on-campus camp Thursday through Saturday, to launch preparations for the 2006 season. With first-year coach Brian Hug in charge, the Trojans will report at 8 a.m. Thursday. Equipment will be issued before players are tested and undergo conditioning drills. The same schedule is in effect both Friday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to noon. Two-a-day drills start at 8 a.m. Monday. The first session runs from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the second from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; that schedule will be in effect through Aug. 17. A single workout on Aug. 18 will get the Trojans ready for the Maroon-Gold intrasquad game at 9 a.m. Aug. 19. Two-a-day drills will be held Aug. 21 and 22. One session is slated Aug. 23, and on Aug. 24, a scrimmage, against an opponent and at a site to be announced, is scheduled. The Trojans will practice Aug. 25, have the weekend off, then return Aug. 28 to start working on their game plan for the 2006 opener at Las Vegas Chaparral Sept. 1. The Trojans' home opener is Sept. 8 against Chino, Calif., Don Lugo High School; kickoff is at 7 p.m. In succeeding weeks, the Trojans go to Spring Creek Sept. 15; play at home against Yucca Valley, Calif., Sept. 22, and host Legacy, a new Las Vegas high school, Sept. 29. The Southern Nevada Class 3-A League campaign begins Oct. 6 for the regular-season defending champion Trojans. They will go to Mesquite to take on Virgin Valley; in 2005, the Trojans outlasted the Bulldogs 39-33 in overtime in a league game, but lost 26-7 in a playoff game. The Bulldogs advanced to the state finals before bowing 37-14 to Truckee, Calif. On Oct. 13, the Trojans are at Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, which lost 32-21 to PVHS in 2005. On Oct. 20, Pahrump Valley plays its Homecoming game against long-time nemesis Overton Moapa Valley. The Pirates won 28-14 in 2005, handing the Trojans their only loss in four league games. The regular season ends Oct. 27, with Boulder City visiting the Trojans, who rallied from a 16-0 deficit to prevail 32-16 on the Eagles' field in 2005. Preseason workouts for Pahrump Valley's other fall sports - boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, and girls golf - begin Monday. The girls golf team, coached by Julie Floyd, is the Nevada Class 3-A champion. The volleyball team, which has made four appearances in the last five state tournaments, will be coached by Richard Barker, who succeeds Julie Harris. Steve Coleman will coach the girls' soccer team, which set a school record with 14 victories last fall. A coach has yet to be named for the boys' team; C.J. Johnson guided the Trojans to the state championship game in 2005, where they lost 2-0 to Truckee. The cross-country team will be coached by Andy Anderson, who replaces Ed Dabrowski. |
