10 reasons to re-elect DeMeo

1. A resident of Pahrump.

2. Children and senior citizens safety a priority, i.e.,

a. Neighborhood watch.

b. D.A.R.E. and G.R.E.A.T. programs.

c. Resource officers.

3. Accessible <!-- 2013(unknown) --> no problem too small -- no opinion too unimportant. (He even answers his own phone.)

4. Sheriff DeMeo has improved the NCSO through continued education and training.

5. Honest. No graft with Tony.

6. Tony's wife, Linda.

7. Our sheriff has put a real hurt on Pahrump's drug scene.

8. Takes good care of his mom. "Judge a man by how he treats his mother."

9. A great organizer. Considering our population growth and not enough manpower, he stills manages to give us quality service.

10. He has great hair!

Thank you, Tony. Continue the progress.

Response to Marcia Enck

I am writing this letter in response to the letter that Marcia Enck wrote that was published on July 21, 2006.

I'm sorry that you have a neighbor problem. My wife and I had a long ongoing problem with one of our neighbors. For us, our problems started the day ground was broken on our home (June 2003) and had continued until last month. He sold his house and moved away; finally our problem was solved.

We moved into our home on Dec. 17, 2003, and since then I have lost count of how many times this one neighbor called the sheriff's office to complain about something happening at our home that was disturbing his peace. Since none of his complaints were valid and that as far as the law was concerned we were not doing anything illegal or against the law, he then resorted to threats, and to make a long story short, this resulted in my wife and I getting a protection order against him and the subsequent extended protection order.

I am 41 years old and permanently and totally disabled. We have been constantly building and adding on to our home to better accommodate my disabilities. Having a large ongoing construction site invites theft and/or burglary; unfortunately this has happened several times on my property to date. I think that every deputy that works out of this office has been to my home whether neighbor complaint, theft report, burglary in progress or false alarm from security system. During all of this one thing has been constant and that is how impressed I have been with the professionalism, response time and general overall performance of the sheriff and his deputies.

My wife and I moved from Las Vegas to Pahrump because of the huge difference in the cost of an acre of land. Las Vegas has been and is expected to continue to be one of the fastest growing cities in the country, both the population and jobs. For most of the people moving to Las Vegas for a job, a one-hour commute is a lot better than what they were doing before, and this is going to cause Pahrump to continue to grow at an even faster rate than it has to date.

We need to vote "Yes" for the sales tax increase to provide a source of revenue to pay for the growing demands for police and fire services.

In my opinion, a sad fact about life in America today is that people are quick to complain, but seldom does someone take the time and effort, especially to write a letter to compliment someone for a job well done. I first met Sheriff DeMeo about two years ago, today I know him personally as Tony and his wife Linda. Tony DeMeo is a good, decent, honest man that is dedicated to his job as sheriff. I am proud of the job that he has done, and by the turnout at a recent fundraiser at the VFW hall, so is the community. I have personally committed time, money and other resources towards the campaign to re-elect Sheriff Tony DeMeo. I consider it a privilege and honor to be one of the many volunteers working on this campaign. On the upcoming election, I ask all of Nye County to vote for Tony DeMeo, so he can continue to be our sheriff.

Response to Arthur Jones

This is a response to Mr. Arthur Jones' letter to the editor dated Aug. 2, 2006. You asked if I went to Lieseke and complained about his driving habits, and you have lived here in the Township of Pahrump since 1992 and you still asked that. You know that would have gone nowhere, Mr. Jones. Before you or I moved here there was also a rock road going to Las Vegas, and before that people used horses to get everywhere they needed to go. That doesn't mean what worked back then will work today. That's called forward progress, Mr. Jones.

Things have changed in this world, and we have to change with the world, or life comes to a standstill.

Now you say an auxiliary officer made a racist statement to you (your words). Again, things have changes in the world and with our laws. Years ago people would have just pulled out their gun and shot the person, but in today's world there are rules set in place called the laws, and they seem to favor the people that commit crimes.

Our sheriff's department has to follow those rules, or they leave the taxpayers and voters open for lawsuits. I would rather have a sheriff that makes sure the rules are followed to the letter than one that goes out and Wild Bills the public.

The law has to apply to everyone evenly, and unfortunately these things take time, and they tie up our court system.

You say I sounded angry, Mr. Jones. I get angry at any elected official who is more worried about the few, and I'm sure that I'm not the only voter tired of this crap. This community is for us all, and the things done here affect us all. If you read my last letter you would not have made this statement, Mr. Jones, "You sound like you're angry you didn't get a sheriff's card so you could flash it around. Shame on you."

Nice finger-pointing, Mr. Jones, but try this old saying, "Never point a finger at someone because you have three fingers pointing back at you."

The only people that should be carrying a sheriff's card are the people who are on the Nye County Sheriff's payroll or the officers on auxiliary force. If I wanted a sheriff's card I would have gone to school to become a sheriff and not the four-year college I went to get my degree. You, on the other hand, Mr. Jones sound like you're part of that little clique. The differences are I don't want to be part of any little clique.

We need officials in power that want to be part of the bigger picture, and the voters and elected officials by working together move Nye County, and the Township of Pahrump forward to keep up with our changing times. I don't care what party they're in; when I vote it's about who is going to work for us all.

Too many laws

When you read the local political ads, remember the party you vote for means something. If you were to vote for a local Republican, you are supporting a person that has chosen a political party that starts wars against other countries for no apparent reason and then proceeds to occupy that country.

Voting for a Republican also shows support for religious organizations running our government and controlling our lives. Candice Trummell is a great local example of this. Her actions have caused our county to spend needed funds to fight to protect an unconstitutional law that she supported, but she will not have to defend. Her actions as a public official have been unforgivable.

Voting for a Democrat is certainly not without its drawbacks. If you like being free to own a firearm, don't vote for a Democrat. They also love taxes and think we should all pay our part, but they believe our part is much larger than most of us would feel comfortable paying.

Our government, at all levels, has grown too large and has way too much power over our lives. Is it the lack of patriotism that causes people to stay home from the polls, or perhaps it's a quiet revolt against a system gone mad?

Why don't we ever hear a politician's promise to get rid of laws? Its been 230 years of creating laws. Don't we have enough already? Maybe we should show up at the polls this time with signs of our own? Maybe its not too late for us and we can stand up and say stop it. No more laws. No more wars. No more oppressive government officials telling us they are here to protect us by restricting freedom further.

Don't think its bad to be caught up in this government web? How do you feel when a police officer pulls up behind your car with his lights on? Do you feel protected ... or threatened?

Citizens deserve respect

This is not an endorsement for any candidate for sheriff. They all seem to have some good ideas. That said, we'd like to share two experiences we've had during the DeMeo era.

A couple years ago, a friend was involved in an accident at the end of our street. Sue was a retired school teacher close to the age of 70. She called us on her cell phone so we hurried over. Her car was totalled.

When Linda went to see how our friend was, a deputy said, "Get out of here! We don't need any crack whores around!" Those were his actual words.

Linda was stunned. Without ever seeing her before, he had no right to say that to her. When Linda complained to Sheriff DeMeo about it, he just shrugged and blew it off with an "oh well" attitude.

The second incident occurred June 15th of this year at our home. A friend of ours who lived in his trailer on our property passed away in his sleep. He had been in poor health for many years.

When I discovered him that morning, I called the sheriff's Office.

Deputy Lonnie Daniels arrived and after checking the situation agreed Mike just passed away.

Another deputy came and they concurred.

Then three detectives show, all have to take a look, like Mike was a circus sideshow.

It should have been obvious that it was from natural causes, not foul play. Instead, they asked when I found him, when I saw him last, etc. Then they would go confer, look in my direction and come back to ask the same questions again -- as if I was the suspect.

Five cops when they only needed one. No wonder DeMeo says he understaffed. He'd probably like to have them riding six deep in a Crown Vic to write traffic tickets.

To Deputy Daniels' credit, he was very professional, courteous and caring. He stayed until Mike's body was removed and he honestly felt sorry for our ordeal.

We wish he was on the ballot as a candidate.

Can you guess who we're not voting for?
