Library book signing

Cinderella Girl workshop Thursday

Art show at courthouse

The Pahrump Arts Council will install a new mixed media, open show Thursday at the Nye County Courthouse.

Rotary Club candidates night

The Pahrump Valley Rotary Club will host a candidates night from 6-10 p.m. Thursday at the Saddle West.

This is the last chance before the primary to ask questions. The public is encouraged to attend.

Community awareness meeting Thursday

A community awareness meeting will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Pahrump Community Center, Room B.

This meeting is open to the entire community. Please bring the whole family to learn more information about gun safety, domestic violence, children's safety, child abuse and neglect and much more.

New art gallery at senior center

The Pahrump Arts Council will install an art gallery space at the Pahrump Senior Center Friday.

A reception to celebrate the opening of this new gallery showcasing one or two person shows will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 18 at the senior center. The artists will be Doris Smith and Janet Toy, respected local artists.

VFW August calendar

The August calendar of events for the VFW Post 10054 on Homestead Road is as follows: domestic beer $1.25, bottle beer $1.50, draft $1.25 every Thursday; breakfast served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Sunday, $4 donation; and full menu lunches served by Dennis from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Dinners:

Friday -- Bernie's fish fry, 5-7 p.m.

Aug. 18 -- Legion Auxiliary pork roast, 5-7 p.m.

Aug. 25 -- No dinner, national convention.

Aug. 27 -- National convention.

All dinners are $6 and served from 4-7 p.m., unless otherwise noted.

Youth issues workshop Saturday

The Nye Communities Coalition, in partnership with St. Martin's Episcopal Church, invites the community to a free workshop, "Asset Building with Youth: In Faith-Based Communities," from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St.

Participants will gain an understanding of youth issues and risks and what communities can do to create safe and supportive environments for youth.

The workshop will be facilitated by Loyd Platson, NCC Task Force coordinator and substance abuse prevention specialist.

Televised political forum Friday

Channel 30 is giving all candidates running for office in Nye County to come to the station and give a three-minute public speech on Harley's Show from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at 250 W. Nopah Vista.

To get to the studio, go seven miles north on Highway 160; left on Country Place; drive one block and a right on Nopah; follow curve and find 250 on the right.

The August class schedule for Family to Family Connection, located at 160 S. Emery, is as follows:

Saturday -- Nevada Early Intervention, 11 a.m.

Tuesday -- Teen Mom Day one year anniversary, 2-4 p.m.

Aug. 17 -- Family Vehicle Safety Program class, 3:45-6 p.m.

Aug. 18 -- Ages to Stages developmental screening, please call for appointment.

Aug. 22 -- Nevada Early Intervention, noon.

Aug. 25 -- Infant and child CPR, 1 p.m.

Aug. 28 through Aug. 31 -- Closed for training.

Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Playgroup is at noon every Thursday.

Rosemary Clarke school enrollment

The Rosemary Clarke Middle School office will re-open Monday. The school will be available for enrollment for new students who were not enrolled on the last day of the 2005-2006 school year in a Nye County School.

Enrollment for sixth graders will be Tuesday, seventh graders on Aug. 16, and eighth graders on Aug. 17. The time to enroll will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. all three days.

A parent orientation will be held in the Rosemary Clarke Middle School gym Aug. 24.

The first day of school for students will be Aug. 28. Rosemary Clarke school hours are from 7:10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Schedules will be handed out during first period.

Republican women monthly meeting

The Pahrump Valley Republican Women will hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Community College, Room 122, on Calvada Boulevard.

Guest speakers will be Sheriff Tony DeMeo, running for re-election and Peter Liakopoulos, Nye County commissioner district 5 candidate.

Fall film festival accepting entries

The Pahrump Arts Council invites you to submit a short film (40 minutes or less, on VHS only) to: High Desert Shorts, P.O. Box 5610, Pahrump, NV 89041.

The seven categories are: Animation, Comedy, Drama, Documentary, Family, Sci-fi, and Action/Advenure.

The deadline for entries is Tuesday. The High Desert Shorts International Film Festival will be held Sept. 25-27. The HDSIFF is sponsored by the Pahrump Arts Council, the Pahrump Nugget, the Pahrump Chamber of Commerce, the Nevada Arts Council and Linda Kass of KPVM TV.

Airstream Club rally

The Sierra Nevada Unit of Wally Byam Caravan Club's International Airstream Club will rally at Lassen National Park Aug. 18, 19 and 20 at Hot Creek camping area No. 2, northwest of Susanville (the gathering area).

There will be boiling springs, "morning glory" pools, bubbling mud pots, boats to rent, fish to catch and six self-guided nature trails. Bring your Airstream or Argosy trailer and come for a day or longer.
